FLOWERS and four-legged friends will bring colour and character to Queenscliff next weekend when the town’s third annual flower show makes its return.<\/p>\n

More than 1,500 people are expected to converge on the Old School Hall, on the corner of Hobson and Learmonth streets, on Saturday, October 18 between 9am and 2pm.<\/p>\n

A much-loved tradition prior to its discontinuation in the 1970s, the flower show returned in 2022 after more than 50 years, quickly reclaiming its place as a favourite on the local calendar.<\/p>\n

Organising committee member Trish Taylor said the event tapped into cherished traditions, evoking the spirit of days gone by.<\/p>\n

“For the older members of the community, it takes them back to the era of the church fetes. It was a very enjoyable time, and it was a big thing for people to go to their local church,” she said.<\/p>\n

“This is very much about what Queenscliff was like and I think people really enjoy it.”<\/p>\n

Gardeners are encouraged to enter their finest flowers and vegetables, with prizes up for grabs across a wide range of categories, including Best Arrangement of Fresh Flowers, Best Bunch of Lettuce and dedicated awards for children.<\/p>\n

With Devonshire tea, an array of market stalls, and opportunities to win prizes from the spinning wheel throughout the day, Ms Taylor said, there will be plenty for people to do.<\/p>\n

For children, there will be pot painting activities, face painting, an art display and more.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got a wonderful raffle this year \u2014 really generous donations \u2014 and, of course, hopefully we’ll get lots of entries,” Ms Taylor said.<\/p>\n

Returning for a second year, the light-hearted dog show will kick off at 11am.<\/p>\n

While better weather is forecast this year, it is expected to deliver just as much fun and hilarity as last year’s event, which saw St George’s Anglican Church transformed into a runway after wet weather forced the show indoors.<\/p>\n

Dog show organiser and Borough of Queenscliffe councillor Donnie Grigau said this year’s event will feature a guest judge in Bishop Brad Billings of the Anglican Church of Australia.<\/p>\n

“We’re going to get some divine intervention,” Cr Grigau joked.<\/p>\n

There will be four categories awards this year: Best Owner Look-alike, Waggiest Tail, Best Paw Shake and Best Groomed. Entries will close on Thursday, October 16.<\/p>\n
