TWO parcels of City of Greater Geelong-owned land in Ocean Grove will be sold to make way for commercial development and upgraded public spaces, as part of a plan to revitalise the town centre.<\/p>\n

At its September meeting, the council approved the sale of 94 The Parade, a “pocket park”, and 89-91 The Terrace, which is being used as a car park.<\/p>\n

The land sales have been billed as an important step forward in progressing the urban design framework for the township, which was adopted in 2014 following consultation with residents, businesses and local groups.<\/p>\n

The city confirmed the sales are conditional on planning approvals and provisions to retain public car parking within the precinct.<\/p>\n

The land sales, Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said, will support improvements in the town centre.<\/p>\n

The market value of the land being sold will be reinvested into nearby streetscape improvements and public realm upgrades, including safer and more connected intersections at Hodgson Street and The Parade, in partnership with the Department of Transport and Planning.<\/p>\n

“This decision reflects council’s commitment to working with the community to improve the precinct to meet the needs of a growing area,” Cr Kontelj said. “We thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback and help shape the outcome.”<\/p>\n

About 90 submissions were received during the consultation process<\/a>. A submissions review panel was held in July, but only one community member opted to present their submission in person.<\/p>\n

Cr Andrew Katos, chair of the planning portfolio, said the sales would help deliver the community’s long-term vision for the heart of Ocean Grove.<\/p>\n

“These sites have the potential to better support local business and improve town centre accessibility for locals and visitors,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The sale moves us closer to realising the community’s vision for a town centre that maintains Ocean Grove’s unique character and identity.”<\/p>\n

The small park at 94 The Parade will be rezoned for commercial use before the sale. The car park at 89-91 The Terrace is already zoned for commercial use.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
