BARWON Coast will be upgrading two key beach access points along 13th Beach ahead of the peak\u00a0summer period.<\/p>\n
Works to repair access stairs at Corners and Cylinders will help to improve safety, accessibility and environmental protection at the two popular coastal locations.<\/p>\n
The new stairway at Corners will replace a structure more than 25 years old and constantly susceptible to storms and erosion.<\/p>\n
The upgrades will incorporate feedback from Barwon Coast’s Accessibility Community Survey to meet modern safety standards while protecting coastal vegetation.<\/p>\n
From October 20, the existing stairs will be closed, with beach users asked to the western stairs at the location instead.<\/p>\n
Barwon Coast closed the Cylinders Beach staircase in July this year with the intention of protecting community safety following significant tidal surges and dune erosion.<\/p>\n
The stairs were significantly structurally damaged and deemed by an independent engineer as unsafe.<\/p>\n
To ensure safe access before summer, Barwon Coast will repair the Cylinders staircase in the same time frame as the Corners replacements.<\/p>\n
The Corners upgrades are thanks to funding from the state government’s 2024-25 Coastal Public Access and Risk Grants Program, while the works at Cylinders are fully funded by Barwon Coast.<\/p>\n
