CREATIVITY has been a staple in the life of local artist Jess Matters for as long as she can remember.<\/p>\n

For some, art is something they hang on the walls of their house. For Matters, art gives her the space to process and heal.<\/p>\n

Her keen interest in the skill was sparked by a natural curiosity \u2013 a curiosity she has continued to explore since the age of 14 and one she’s turned into her own business, Jessica Michelle Creative.<\/p>\n

Inspired by textures, the exploration of ideas and what she can do with those is imprinted heavily in her works, creating pieces that can be seen and felt through texture.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s really hard to articulate what inspires me in a way, because it’s just play, it’s my therapeutic time, it’s my meditative time,” Matters said.<\/p>\n

“It’s where I can just see and explore texture but also explore whatever it is that I’m feeling or going through at the time.”<\/p>\n

Pieces generally start out as a vision inside Matters’ mind of what she wants something to look like.<\/p>\n

“A lot of the time, it doesn’t come out that way at all,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Texture very much takes you on a journey and you’ve kind of got to work with the plaster of the texture paste and allow it to come to life itself.”<\/p>\n

Her journey into what was initially a hobby can be traced back to classes she took at the Victorian College of Arts, where she met an art therapist.<\/p>\n

“She taught me that art can be a way of expressing emotions and feelings that you don’t necessarily have language to articulate and helps you to process,” Matters said.<\/p>\n

“That’s become something that I’ve always returned to over my life during hard times, during good times, it’s just been my way of expressing.”<\/p>\n

Throughout COVID, Matters started experimenting with texture as a medium, using the lockdown periods as a chance to become creative again.<\/p>\n

Art has always been an important part of the artist’s life and in recent years, she’s taken the leap to make it her full-time job.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Texture just kind of lit my soul up in a way that it kind of brought those things together.<\/p>\n

“One being able to express myself through art, but two, I really enjoy tactile experiences, and texture is obviously very tactile, that’s where the texture came alive for me.”<\/p>\n

The path towards Jessica Michelle Creative has not always been a straightforward one. Matters comes from a leadership role in the corporate world, with that chapter of her life closing in November last year.<\/p>\n

It was a space in time she said felt like a turning point, a moment of wondering if she should jump back into another job and what she should do with her life.<\/p>\n

“I had some downtime, I took some time off to explore that and given the time of year, it was the most appropriate time to have that break.<\/p>\n

During the New Year period, the artist decided to spend some time by herself, making art and creating the business she has always dreamed of.<\/p>\n

In the texture workshops, the artists can create their own pieces of works, led by Matters.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Her business got its start by turning ideas into works of art, selling them at markets before running her own textured art workshops.<\/p>\n

“The thing I love about the textured art workshops is that there’s no cookie cutter vibes to them,” Matters said.<\/p>\n

“Everyone creates a really individual piece at the end of the workshop.<\/p>\n

“There’s no two pieces alike, I teach them the techniques, but they go on their own journey of exploration with the plaster and the texture paste and all come out with something different, which is really beautiful to see.”<\/p>\n

Business owners will often face their own set of challenges and the arts industry is not immune. However Matters is taking it all in her stride, learning and growing from everything thrown her way.<\/p>\n

“One of the challenges with any small business is the lack of peers and collaboration when you’re working in an office environment, you’ve got these people you can bounce off with ideas.<\/p>\n

“When you’re working for yourself, by yourself, that can be a little bit isolating, but I’m lucky to have some really amazing supportive people in my life.”<\/p>\n

Matters is also a qualified practitioner in holistic integrated creative arts therapy, allowing her to add another arm to her business where she can create workshops for people to be more intentional around processing what they are going through.<\/p>\n

The workshops will create an opportunity for people to reconnect with themselves and provide a space similar to what Matters had, where she could create art in a way that helped process emotion.<\/p>\n

“I’m really inspired and excited by that,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I think my intention with all of this, whether it is creating a piece of art for someone as a commissioned piece, whether it is people purchasing something from my website or a market, a textured art workshop or a creative therapy workshop.<\/p>\n

“I want to be able to connect, help people to connect to themselves and hold space for that.”<\/p>\n

0 I think it gives me space to process and heal, I think art can be a really powerful tool in anyone’s healing journey and definitely has been for me.”<\/p>\n
