{"id":111357,"date":"2025-10-20T14:34:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T03:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/cyclists-take-on-the-great-ocean-road\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T15:13:29","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T04:13:29","slug":"cyclists-take-on-the-great-ocean-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/cyclists-take-on-the-great-ocean-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyclists take on the Great Ocean Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 2,000 cyclists from around the globe descended on the Great Ocean Road region last week for the 2025 UCI\u202fGran\u202fFondo\u202fWorld\u202fChampionships \u2013 transforming it into a high\u2013stakes arena for amateur cyclists chasing rainbow jersey glory.<\/p>\n<p>The five-day titles concluded on Sunday with a punishing 131km road race in and around Lorne.<\/p>\n<p>Dutchman Jeroen\u202fVan\u202fVoorden emerged as the first finisher and claimed gold in the men\u2019s\u202f19 to 34\u202fage group category with a commanding time of 3.08:28.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was actually quite happy with the wind because we\u2019re used to it,\u201d Van\u202fVoorden said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made the race tougher, and that\u2019s what I like. Photo: CON CHRONIS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Australian Matilda\u202fRaynolds produced an emotional ride to win her age group and finish third overall in the women&#8217;s standings &#8211; behind America&#8217;s Jill Patterson and Poland&#8217;s Alina Mylka &#8211; after being diagnosed with stage four lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been 12 months since my diagnosis, and I spent six months getting healthy and rebuilding,\u201d Raynolds said post-race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel really proud of where I\u2019ve got myself back to. Today I just wanted to enjoy it. It\u2019s so different to race without pressure &#8211; to look up, see where you are, and realise how lucky we are. I didn\u2019t care too much about the result, but I\u2019m glad I got it in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Racing on familiar roads made the moment even more special for the Victorian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve just felt so proud of Victoria and Lorne &#8211; this incredible playground &#8211; and to show it off to riders from all over the world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had South Africans, the Spanish, the French, the Dutch \u2026 and to have everyone here in the peloton on closed roads was just magical.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172977\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172977\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-172977 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/UCIWCStartPicConChr_27871-1024x683.jpg?_t=1760931177\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australian Matilda\u202fRaynolds won her age group and finished third overall in the women&#8217;s standings. Photo: CON CHRONIS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Raynolds navigated the decisive Benwerrin climb and headwinds with precision before launching a strong final effort to win gold in the women&#8217;s 35 to 39 age group, finishing in 3.44:18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescending the back of the Great Ocean Road on fully closed roads was a dream,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t often get that as an amateur. Huge thanks to the volunteers and organisers &#8211; events like this aren\u2019t easy, and everyone created such a positive, special atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the week, the championships opened with a 23km individual time trial in Lorne, where riders faced a technical out\u2013and\u2013back coastal loop featuring steep ramps and steady climbing.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many stand-out performances was Frenchman Marcel Eve, the oldest racer at this year\u2019s titles, who won his career fourth gold medal a day before his 85th birthday.
