	{"id":11165,"date":"2018-06-13T09:57:32","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T09:57:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=11165"},"modified":"2018-06-15T07:26:46","modified_gmt":"2018-06-15T07:26:46","slug":"councillor-column","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/councillor-column\/","title":{"rendered":"COUNCILLOR COLUMN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rural and Peri Urban Advisory\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Committee update<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although our city is growing rapidly, a large portion of Greater Geelong remains rural.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important that this distinctive part of our region\u2019s character is maintained and supported.<\/p>\n<p>This year we formed a Rural and Peri Urban Advisory Committee to represent the interests of our rural residents.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m pleased to be chairing the committee, which includes community members and representatives from industry bodies, the City of Greater Geelong and neighbouring municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>Our five community members were chosen from an extremely strong field of applicants, and bring a broad range of knowledge in farming and the environment:<\/p>\n<p>Eric Sharkey \u2013 Balliang East resident who\u2019s a board member of the G21 Agribusiness Forum and active in two local Landcare groups and the CFA.<\/p>\n<p>Fiona Conroy \u2013 a farmer on the Bellarine Peninsula and former member of the Geelong Saleyards User Group.<\/p>\n<p>Geoff McFarlane \u2013 extensive career in natural resource management, working with federal and local government and several community groups. Lectures on sustainable land management at Marcus Oldham College.<\/p>\n<p>Joan Lindros \u2013 Secretary of the Geelong Environment Council and an active member of a number of environment groups.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart McLean \u2013 Chair of the Australian Livestock Saleyards Association with more than 50 years\u2019 experience as a primary producer. Awarded an OAM in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re privileged to have all five of these outstanding people volunteering their time, along with Dr Angela Clough representing Agriculture Victoria, who\u2019s an expert in biosecurity.<\/p>\n<p>The committee recently held its first meeting, where we agreed on our initial areas of focus.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these relate to the transition of saleyards services following the closure of the Geelong saleyards.<\/p>\n<p>Matters we\u2019ll be prioritising include:<br \/>\n\u2022 Livestock exchange<br \/>\n\u2022 Truck wash<br \/>\n\u2022 Biosecurity<br \/>\n\u2022 Information exchange<\/p>\n<p>Although we\u2019re required to meet quarterly, for the time being we\u2019ll be meeting every month so we can make some early progress.<\/p>\n<p>Our role is to provide considered, expert advice to Council, and I\u2019m confident this committee can have a positive impact for the rural and peri urban community in Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>World Environment Day<\/strong><br \/>\nLast Tuesday (June 5) was World Environment Day.<\/p>\n<p>As Deputy Chair of Council\u2019s Environment and Sustainability portfolio, I attended a wonderful\u00a0event at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre \u2013 the Green Achiever Awards.<\/p>\n<p>These celebrate outstanding environmental initiatives from City of Greater Geelong staff.<\/p>\n<p>From nine excellent nominations, there were two winners: Colin Hunt from Leisurelink, who has started a \u2018Green Team\u2019 amongst staff to develop initiatives that will reduce the centre\u2019s footprint; and Janeen Rowe and Bonnie Birkett-Rees from the Boorai Centre in Ocean Grove, who have done some brilliant work educating pre-school children in sustainable concepts.<\/p>\n<p>We also heard insightful presentations from CSIRO research scientist Kathy Willis and Matt Crawley from the Caring for our Bays program.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Greater Geelong is one of only three councils in Australia to be awarded \u2018One Planet Living\u2019 certification based on our sustainability policies and strategies.<\/p>\n<p>We also encourage all residents to do your best to reduce your environmental footprint. Avoiding single-use plastics wherever possible is a good start.<\/p>\n<p>Simple changes such as bringing your own coffee cup and using reusable lunch boxes can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Latest from the Potato Shed<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Bellarine Multi Arts Facility in Drysdale (better known as the Potato Shed) is a wonderful asset for our community.<\/p>\n<p>As a Council representative on the Potato Shed\u2019s committee, I\u2019m excited about the upcoming schedule, which features theatre, live music and even a movie.<\/p>\n<p>Between now and the end of June, the venue will host renowned Celtic musicians Colin Mockett and Shirley Power in \u2018The Celts! Myths, Music and Humour\u2019, as well as a screening of long-awaited documentary \u2018The Gut Movie\u2019 with a live panel Q&amp;A, and award-winning play Hotel Sorrento produced by HIT Productions.<\/p>\n<p>Visit geelongaustralia.com.au\/potatoshed for more information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Celtic Festival a hit<br \/>\n<\/strong>Over the long weekend I had a great time attending the National Celtic Festival in Portarlington.<\/p>\n<p>This festival has become an annual tradition, attracting around 15,000 people each year.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to the organisers on an outstanding job.
