ANDREW Turner was among State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers recognised for their significant service to the community at a recent ceremony.<\/p>\n
Mr Turner, who is a member of the Bellarine Unit, was presented with a National Medal for 15 years diligent service to the SES at the South West Service Awards.<\/p>\n
The Medal recognises emergency and volunteer servicemen and women who risk their lives or safety to protect or assist the community in times of emergency or natural disaster.<\/p>\n
Beginning his volunteering at Dunkeld Unit in 2000, Mr Turner said he joined the SES to become involved in the local community and do something different from his day job. Transferring to the Bellarine Unit in 2009, Mr Turner has and continues to be involved in all aspects of SES, including training volunteers, responding to road crash rescues, flood and storm events and utilising his IT skills where the unit needs them.<\/p>\n
During the ceremony, Nolla Vella and Renie Preston from the Bellarine Unit also received awards.<\/p>\n
SES volunteers respond to flood, storm, earthquake and landslide emergencies, as well as operating the largest road rescue network in Victoria.<\/p>\n
Volunteers also support other agencies such as Victoria Police and CFA in the field, helping with a wide array of tasks.<\/p>\n
