PRIVATE gardens across Portarlington and Indented Head will throw open their gates this today for the Portarlington Garden Club’s annual garden trail.<\/p>\n

Stretching from one end of Portarlington to the other side of Indented Head, the trail features a diverse mix of 15 gardens, from compact courtyards and front yards to sprawling acreages and historic properties.<\/p>\n

Garden club member Kathleen Chapman said the event, which is now in its third year, celebrates the region’s passion for gardening and the creativity of its talented green thumbs.<\/p>\n

“People who are gardeners are always, always tweaking; it’s always a work in progress and it’s never finished.<\/p>\n

“To have a date when it’s all looking good and they can show it to people is a real buzz for them, and they have a lovely time chatting to people that come.”<\/p>\n

Among the highlights this year is a “standout” historic property established in 1875 that houses trees listed on the Victorian Register of Significant Trees, and a garden, created only six months ago by landscape architect Christian Jenkins, who has been featured on The Block.<\/p>\n

Each garden, Ms Chapman said, offers a different atmosphere and learning opportunity.<\/p>\n

“It doesn’t matter whether you just have a little courtyard or whether you’ve got a huge property \u2014 you can take something away that will be useful.<\/p>\n

“Some of them specialise in native plants. Some of them are more interested in edible plants.<\/p>\n

“There’s one person who’s doing everything in pots, and if you’ve got a little patio, that’s the way to go.”<\/p>\n

The self-guided garden trail will feature talks, demonstrations and special activities throughout the day, including a walk-and-talk on growing Mediterranean edibles at the Portarlington Primary School community garden and a tour of the vineyard and private garden at the nearby Hounds of the Vine winery.<\/p>\n

At the Indented Head Community Hall, visitors can enjoy Devonshire teas, browse the plant sale and attend a series of garden-themed presentations, including a composting session, a festive decoration workshop and a major raffle, featuring prizes donated by local businesses.<\/p>\n

The event will also serve as a fundraiser for the Portarlington Garden Club and Portarlington Neighbourhood House, which will share the proceeds.<\/p>\n

The garden trail will run from 10am to 4pm. A map of participating gardens will be made able on ticket purchase.<\/p>\n

Tickets are available from 12 Harding Street in Portarlington, the Indented Head Community Hall, or from 9.30am on the day.<\/p>\n
