BELL Park has announced their inaugural women’s footy side will enter the AFL Barwon competition in 2026, with former Thomson star Phoebe Monahan to coach the group.<\/p>\n
The Dragons made the announcement via social media earlier this month, with Monahan named as head coach and local legend Jady Ingleton named as her assistant.<\/p>\n
Monahan is a former AFLW player for GWS, Richmond and Brisbane and featured in the Lions’ 2023 premiership. The Geelong local has played the last two seasons for Thomson, where she won the league Best and Fairest Award and was named captain of the team of the year.<\/p>\n
She expressed her excitement to be named head coach at Bell Park and is keen for a new challenge.<\/p>\n
“It’s a huge honour and something I’m really proud to be a part of,” she said.<\/p>\n
“It’s not every day you get to help build a program from the ground up, and I think it’s a really special moment for the club and for women’s footy in Geelong. It will be a new challenge and huge opportunity for me to grow in the football space, and I’m just excited to get started.”<\/p>\n
Monahan was drawn to the Dragons having grown up in the area, making it a full circle moment.<\/p>\n
“It was clear they’ve got a genuine passion for growing the women’s space and doing it properly,” she said.<\/p>\n
“I grew up around Bell Park, so it’s got that familiar, home feel for me – to come back and be part of building the women’s program felt like a really natural fit.”<\/p>\n
After a decorated football career to date, Monahan said she will be able to draw on her experiences to build a strong group.<\/p>\n
“Playing AFLW showed me what it takes to get the best out of yourself and others at an elite level, while local footy reminded me how important culture, connection, and having fun is.<\/p>\n
“I’d like to say my coaching style will draw from both, that being high standards and hard work, but balanced with enjoyment and a strong team connection.<\/p>\n
“We will be wanting to build strong foundations in both areas – on field will be a focus on developing skills, game sense, and a competitive drive within the group. But equally, there will be a huge focus on creating a space where players feel supported, valued, and a part of the club.<\/p>\n
“Off the field, I’d love to see the group develop genuine friendships and a culture that will represent what we will want Bell Park women’s team to stand for.”<\/p>\n
Monahan urged any females thinking of playing football to give it a go, as the league continues its positive trend.<\/p>\n
“You’ve got nothing to lose and something amazing to gain,” she said.<\/p>\n
“The women’s game is only continuing to grow, there’s a place for everyone, no matter your experience or fitness levels. Girls are picking up a football for the first time at 30 years old.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
