AN AVERAGE of nine posties a day are falling victim to dog-related incidents, a number that has prompted Australia Post to urge dog owners to secure their pets.<\/p>\n

There are growing fears the number of injuries will increase around the country as deliveries surge with busy sales and the Christmas season.<\/p>\n

In the past six months, more than 1,190 dog-related incidents have taken place with repeated calls for owners to secure their pets.<\/p>\n

One in three incidents occurred on customer property, while either at the front door or when the approaching or leaving to deliver a parcel, while 62 per cent took place on the street, with more than 80 per cent involving dogs escaping or roaming freely.<\/p>\n

Australia Post general manager of safety Russell Munro said actions from dog owners can make a critical difference.<\/p>\n

“Our posties want to be able to deliver for our customers without fear of being attacked or chased by a dog.<\/p>\n

“Regardless of breed or temperament, we urge all owners to keep their dogs safely contained when expecting deliveries.”<\/p>\n

If a postie is threatened or injured by a dog, delivers to a property or street will cease.<\/p>\n

Team members currently carry citronella spray as a last resort, in the past six months the deterrent has been effective in 90 per cent of cases.<\/p>\n

“While the rollout of citronella spray has helped in many situations, we’re still seeing far too many cases of aggressive dog behaviour and unfortunately can’t prevent all incidents from occurring,” Munro said.<\/p>\n

“We’ve seen the number of cases increase over the past six months, which shows there’s still more work to be done to keep our posties safe.<\/p>\n

Australia Post advises dog owners to sit their dog safely in a contained place, separate room, or behind a locked gate, making sure it’s somewhere the dog can stay during delivery and keep them secure.<\/p>\n

Residents can also use the Australia Post app to stay informed with their delivery with up-to-date delivery times or consider using a parcel locker.<\/p>\n
