FAMILIES across the Bellarine will have more opportunities to explore and enjoy the coast this summer, with bookings now open for the 2026 Summer by the Sea program.<\/p>\n

More than 100 free activities, delivered by local coastal land managers, community groups and conservation agencies, will be on offer between January 3 and 18.<\/p>\n

The program invites participants to discover coastal and marine environments either close to home or while holidaying, with a strong focus on learning, conservation and connection to place.<\/p>\n

A range of events are planned for the Bellarine that will appeal to all ages and interests.<\/p>\n

On January 5, a shore snorkel with the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre at Queenscliff invites families to explore the underwater world of Port Phillip Bay. Under experienced supervision, participants can observe marine plants and animals in their natural environment and learn about the bay’s unique ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Then on January 8, families can join the coastal discovery walk at Ocean Grove Main Beach, where educators from the Bellarine Catchment Network will guide beachcombing and explore the shallow intertidal zone, helping participants identify shells, algae and other fascinating marine life.<\/p>\n

For bird lovers, the hooded plover walk ‘n’ talk at Point Lonsdale Lighthouse on January 15 offers a rare chance to learn about the endangered Hooded Plover. Hosted by the Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine, the relaxed guided walk includes binocular-assisted viewing of these remarkable shorebirds and insights into their fragile coastal habitat.<\/p>\n

These local offerings sit alongside a broader program of walks, snorkelling, canoeing and discovery activities across the Bellarine and beyond, all designed to connect young Victorians and their families with coastal nature.<\/p>\n

An “ocean action day” with marine conservation organisation, Sea Shepherd, will also be held at the Geelong Waterfront on January 11.<\/p>\n

Member for Bellarine, Alison Marchant, said she was pleased to support the initiative.<\/p>\n

“This free educational program offers something for everyone, including guided coastal tours, wildlife-themed activities and family-friendly rockpool rambles,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Summer by the Sea invites young Victorians to discover our beaches and coastlines while learning how to care for our oceans and the unique wildlife that call them home.”<\/p>\n

Minister for Environment, Steve Dimopoulous, said the initiative would give families a fun, free way to get active and enjoy local beaches.<\/p>\n

“The program also helps young people learns about Victoria’s amazing marine species and habitats, and to learn how they can help protect our coastal environments,” he said.<\/p>\n
