A DOCUMENTARY about a Bellarine local is taking the film world by storm, screening at festivals around the globe.<\/p>\n

Mother of Chooks profiles Elaine James, who is well known in the region for her love of the birds and their special bond, a story told throughout the film.<\/p>\n

Over the years, she has taken in many chickens, training them to do a variety of things and in the process having them become a major part of her life.<\/p>\n

James worked with mother and son co-director duo Maite Martin-Samos and Jesse Samos Leaman for two years to bring the film together.<\/p>\n

Samos Leaman said his mum met Elaine at a local theatre and learnt of her story, and then pitched the idea of a documentary to him.<\/p>\n

“The documentary for us became this really beautiful process of wanting to really show what Elaine was like and how much she loved her chickens and that they were family.<\/p>\n

“Sometimes documentaries can be trying to shape a lot of the narrative, and we really wanted it to be just what was happening and what it was like to be there.”<\/p>\n

Since its completion, Mother of Chooks has been shown at film festivals around the world including in Toronto, New Zealand, the USA and locally at the North Bellarine Film Festival.<\/p>\n

For the co-directors, to see the film travel the world and get global recognition has been a heartwarming experience and although feeling like people would enjoy it, they didn’t know it would be so well received.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t know what to expect, it’s just been such a pleasant surprise,” Samos Leaman said.<\/p>\n

“I just thought people would end up watching it on YouTube or something, but now it’s travelled the world over in festivals.”<\/p>\n

While Mother of Chooks was the first film Samos Leaman co-directed with his mother, he has produced other short films in the past, including one starring Guy Pearce.<\/p>\n

Getting to create something with Martin Samos was a highlight of the process and the aspect the co-director enjoyed the most, along with the documentary differing in style to his previous works.<\/p>\n

“A lot of my stuff is a lot more drama or existential thriller kind of things, and then working on something with my mum was this new light-hearted approach, bringing joy to the work instead of making people sadder.”<\/p>\n

Looking forward, the two co-directors hoped the documentary could be housed on a streaming platform for people to enjoy.<\/p>\n
