PEOPLE with disability or reduced mobility will have improved access to Portarlington’s main beach this summer, following the introduction of two beach wheelchairs.<\/p>\n

The wheelchairs will be available for free hire from outside the Changing Places facility at Henderson Reserve, which opened in January last year.<\/p>\n

The wheelchairs are designed to be used across sand, grass and other uneven surfaces, allowing users to move easily between the reserve and the beach. The wheelchair’s feature wide tyres intended to absorb shock and improve stability on soft ground.<\/p>\n

Two different wheelchair models have been made available, with the aim of accommodating the preferences of a variety of users.<\/p>\n

The Sandpiper All Terrain wheelchair is designed for use on soft sand and near the water’s edge, while the Mobi-Chair is capable of floating, allowing users to enter the water to around waist depth.<\/p>\n

Bellarine Bayside chief executive, Scott Crabtree, said the introduction of the wheelchairs followed ongoing community requests for improved beach access.<\/p>\n

“I’m thrilled to launch the beach wheelchairs and hope they become a valued community resource, helping more people share and enjoy our beautiful coast this summer,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Community feedback has played a vital role in this project. We’ve had many enquiries over the years about accessible facilities and these investments will break down barriers so more people can enjoy the beach.”<\/p>\n

Mr Crabtree said Bellarine Bayside was committed to creating inclusive spaces along the coast and confirmed further upgrades were already in the pipeline for the coming year.<\/p>\n

The beach wheelchairs were jointly funded by Bellarine Bayside and the Victorian government through its Coastal Public Access and Risk grants program.<\/p>\n

Bellarine MP, Alison Marchant, said the new additions would support greater inclusion across the peninsula.<\/p>\n

“Community facilities and services, such as the beach wheelchairs, are meaningful steps towards creating inclusive communities on the Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\n

“I’m proud that the Victorian government has partnered with Bellarine Bayside to deliver practical solutions that make a real difference for families and individuals with disability.”<\/p>\n

Beach matting has again been installed at the site to provide a firm access route for people using wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids.<\/p>\n
