{"id":115405,"date":"2025-01-26T04:00:04","date_gmt":"2025-01-25T17:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=115405"},"modified":"2026-01-24T15:29:05","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T04:29:05","slug":"dedicated-bellarine-locals-recognised-in-the-2026-australia-day-honours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/dedicated-bellarine-locals-recognised-in-the-2026-australia-day-honours\/","title":{"rendered":"Dedicated Bellarine locals recognised in the 2026 Australia Day Honours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PORTARLINGTON local Dr Gillian Miles has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of her outstanding service to transport and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Miles said she feels deeply humbled by the honour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel really honoured to be recognised by peers and community because for me it&#8217;s a real privilege to have spent my career in the service of delivering transport and infrastructure both for now and for the future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, transport and infrastructure are fundamental things that most people need to use in their everyday lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having worked across multiple senior roles in government and industry, Dr Miles said one of her proudest achievements was establishing the National Women in Transport network.<\/p>\n<p>The network was designed to connect and promote women across the industry, making it easier to highlight female voices in the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just grown and grown and is a fantastic resource \u2013 it\u2019s really simple but people use it all the time now,\u201d Dr Miles said.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception, Dr\u202fMiles has seen strong improvement in women\u2019s representation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been a lot of change over the past decade in this country to give space for women to step in, both at a really practical level on work sites&#8230; but also in the design world of how transport operates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/GillianMilesPhoto2_06382.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Miles said living on the Bellarine has given her a first-hand insight into regional transport and infrastructure requirements. Photo: KRISTOFFER PAULSEN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Though she has stepped away from transport roles at times, Dr Miles admits it\u2019s a field she can never quite leave behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just one of those systems that you just can\u2019t get away from because it\u2019s so complex and it\u2019s so important to get it right,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>To young professionals, especially women entering the sector, she offers reassurance that there are countless opportunities to learn and grow. She also credited her success to the many mentors and employers who supported her.<\/p>\n<p>Living in Portarlington, she said, has also given her a strong appreciation of regional connectivity \u2013 from ferry services to Melbourne to regional transport links \u2013 and a deeper understanding of how vital good infrastructure is for communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also a beautiful place to live, I love it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Dr Miles said she hopes to continue contributing to the sector for as long as she can serve it well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to continue as long as I&#8217;m making a difference and adding value to the future systems in our transport and infrastructure world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate, Dr Miles plans to gather the women in her family to toast a glass of champagne.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/RichardTriggPhoto_06398.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"802\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Trigg started volunteering in the 1970s and has loved getting to incorporate his own enjoyment of sailing into training the next generation. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Drysdale resident Richard\u202fTrigg has also been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his dedicated service to youth and the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#8217;t believe it to start with,\u201d he said. \u201cI thought maybe it was a scam email\u2026 but I was just stunned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I do stuff because I like volunteering and my reward is seeing the benefits of that volunteering.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A commander with the Australian Navy Cadets, who he has been with since 1992, Mr Trigg has devoted decades to training young people in leadership and maritime skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sons aged out at 18 and I kept going \u2013 and I\u2019m still going,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To see the young cadets \u201cmature and grow up through those years&#8221;, he said, is a &#8220;great thrill\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Leopold&#8217;s John Womersley, who was awarded an OAM in 1978, has today also been appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to archery as an officiator and administrator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PORTARLINGTON local Dr Gillian Miles has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of her outstanding service to transport and infrastructure.
