{"id":115584,"date":"2026-02-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=115584"},"modified":"2026-01-28T18:05:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T07:05:37","slug":"a-quarter-of-a-century-in-watercolours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/a-quarter-of-a-century-in-watercolours\/","title":{"rendered":"A quarter of a century in watercolours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THOUGH watercolour can be one of the most challenging and unforgiving mediums to paint with, Bellarine local Alan Eadie persists &#8211; with a selection of his paintings currently on display at the Boronggook Drysdale Library.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very difficult to use,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But when it&#8217;s good, it is really good.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Watercolours can only get darker, he explained, &#8220;once the white is gone, it&#8217;s gone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you lose the white you have to chuck it out,&#8221; he said, which makes it an especially expensive artistic pursuit.<\/p>\n<p>Eadie began painting 25 years ago at an art class in Melbourne. Looking back, he said: &#8220;I just tried something, and kept going\u00a0with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At the time, he was inspired by one of the artists in that class.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s always someone who is better than you,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So you can look at them to learn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Alan-Drysdale-2_18197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alan said watercolour is one of the most difficult mediums to paint with due to its unforgiving nature, however he loves the result when it is done correctly. Photo: NYAH BARNES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even now, I&#8217;m still learning every day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added he enjoys the creative licence he finds in painting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You might be painting something and there&#8217;s a tree in the way,&#8221; he said, &#8220;but you can move that tree in the painting to set it up to look the best.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said he tried to see his paintings through the eyes of subjects if they were viewing\u00a0the art.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years ago, Eadie moved to the Bellarine, providing him with many subjects, particularly for his maritime pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Offering advice to those starting out in watercolour, Eadie said that while paint and brush quality aren&#8217;t everything, paper\u00a0is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t get cheap paper,&#8221; he insisted. &#8220;You could even paint with your fingers, but you need good paper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A highlight of his latest exhibition is a piece inspired by the poem The Man from Snowy River, painted during a class on Australian poetry.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Alan-Drysdale-3_19957.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alan\u2019s artworks are currently on display in the Boronggook Drysdale Library. Photo: NYAH BARNES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The work demonstrates the translucent nature of watercolours, with pigment extending over the writing Alan has incorporated into the piece.<\/p>\n<p>During the week, Eadie attends art sessions in Drysdale, where he enjoys working alongside other creatives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We give each other feedback,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not criticism,&#8221; he added, &#8220;it&#8217;s critique.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eadie&#8217;s artworks are now on display at the Boronggook Drysdale Library.
