A new resource launched by Cancer Council will help schools across the country support a growing number of students, families and staff who are affected by cancer.<\/p>\n
Whether it\u2019s a personal diagnosis of a student or staff member, or a loved one within the community Cancer Council\u2019s fully revised Cancer in the School Community (CITS) resource explains how school staff can provide support
\nthroughout all stages of cancer.<\/p>\n
In Australia, about 1,000 school age children and more than 127,000 adults are diagnosed with cancer each year; about a third of those adults are under 60, and many will have a school aged child.<\/p>\n
Megan Chiswell, head of Cancer Council Victoria\u2019s Cancer Information Support\u00a0Services, said the resource offers expert
\nknowledge and practical advice to ensure, no member of a school community has to face cancer alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery school is a community, a network of relationships connecting students, parents, guardians and family members with principals, teachers and other school staff. It is important to remember that each cancer journey is different, and every individual navigates it in their own way,\u201dshe said.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor example, some people might wish to keep details private, while others will welcome the chance to speak openly about it and are keen to make use of support. When anyone in a school\u00a0community is diagnosed with cancer, people usually want to help but may not be sure where to start.<\/p>\n
\u201cCITS provides guidance on the best approach for discussing cancer in and around the classroom and tips on communicating with people of all ages about cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n
CITS is relevant for all primary and secondary school staff throughout Australia and may also be useful for parents, students or family members.<\/p>\n
