Chris later sold the property in the 1980s before buying it back about 15 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The farm is home to 50 Speckle Park stud cattle, while a further 750 dairy cattle are run at a nearby property at Swan Marsh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_180119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180119\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-180119\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/619281258_1023713616_65853-768x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"717\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-180119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The sky turned bright orange as bushfires spread through Gellibrand last month, destroying more than 35 structures.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Smith said the property was well prepared for a worst-case scenario, with generators ready to power water supplies, pumps drawing unlimited water from the creek, and designated areas set aside to shelter livestock.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tuesday afternoon, for us personally, was a real critical time, as it was for the whole of Gellibrand,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The afternoon there for us, when the wind changed, threatened to put the fires directly south of the town, before going straight through it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were fighting it in neighbours&#8217; paddocks, and later we discovered one of them [a spot fire] had gone into our place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t until 11.30 at night that we realised bush at our place was alight. It maybe burnt up to one acre, but was very slow-moving. In the scheme of things our losses were minor compared to that of others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Smith said the heavy smoke posed one of the greatest dangers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More concerning for us was that our farm was just blanketed in smoke,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We couldn&#8217;t see around the [entire] afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/622909964_1023720067_65831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 1-acre of land at the Smith&#8217;s family farm was impacted.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there had been 100 spot fires going on across the property, we would have been no chance of seeing them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A member of the local CFA for 43 years and a firefighter during Ash Wednesday, Smith said bushfires were inherently unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are all different, you just never know what will happen, it&#8217;s so important to exercise caution,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities estimate more than 35 structures were lost across Gellibrand during the bushfire.<\/p>\n<p>Clean-up efforts are now under way across the township and dangerous trees are being removed due to the risk of collapse or future ignition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The big thing here is the homes lost, which is just awful,&#8221; Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Fire authorities have contained the blaze, but are warning another hot and windy day could see it flare up again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Gellibrand dairy and cattle farmer has shared a first-hand account of what it meant to stay and defend as bushfires bore down on the Otway Ranges last month.
