They come from different walks of life, different towns and different generations. But when the call comes, they answer.

Across the region this summer, volunteer firefighters stood their ground in extreme conditions, putting their own lives on hold to protect others. Their response became a whole-of-region effort. Firefighters from the Surf Coast, Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula joined hundreds of volunteers from across Victoria and into South Australia on strike teams as fires burned in the Otway Ranges in searing heat and volatile conditions.

Simultaneous blazes in Mount Mercer, Anakie and Lismore kept firefighters on their toes. Crews were deployed to tackle these fast-moving grassfires, all while maintaining readiness at home.

Even as teams worked long shifts on the firegrounds, local brigades remained on alert, prepared to respond if their own communities found themselves in need.

These volunteers stepped forward time and again. This week, the Times News Group celebrates them: their sacrifice, their resilience, and the quiet determination that keeps them on the fireline.

Torquay Fire Brigade’s Reice Godfrey. he said. “[We have to] manage their fatigue as well, which is the biggest challenge.

“After that period of a couple of weeks, everybody starts to feel a bit tired and worn down.”

Ensuring volunteers had adequate rest before returning to the fireground became critical as the campaign wore on.

He said the response relied heavily on support from neighbouring brigades and districts, with crews regularly working alongside firefighters from across the region.

A firefighter for 36 years, Flynn says the conditions were familiar to him but acknowledged many volunteers were encountering challenging fire behaviour for the first time.

“We had moments where, particularly down in the Otways, the fire came through and climbed trees really quickly, which was a little bit unusual – so straight up to the top of 30 or 40-foot trees and that was throwing a lot of embers everywhere,”
