{"id":116135,"date":"2026-02-13T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=116135"},"modified":"2026-02-11T21:50:52","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T10:50:52","slug":"jakara-day-inspires-the-next-generation-of-local-heroes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/jakara-day-inspires-the-next-generation-of-local-heroes\/","title":{"rendered":"Jakara Day inspires the next generation of local heroes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STUDENTS at Geelong Christian College Bellarine Campus adorned their uniforms with green and gold on Tuesday to celebrate Jakara Day in tribute to Olympic gold medallist and former student Jakara Anthony.<\/p>\n<p>Head of Campus Nicola\u202fMorish said the day was about more than cheering an Olympic hero; it was about showing students that dedication and humility can grow from their own backyard.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We decided to do a Jakara Day because we&#8217;re so excited by her success,&#8221; Morish said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s inspirational for our kids to see one of their own up there, achieving at that level.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Jakara5_89302.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students adorned their uniforms with green and gold and participated in Olympic themed activities to celebrate Jakara Anthony. Photo: NYAH BARNES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anthony, who studied at the Bellarine Campus as a Year\u202f9 student before graduating in 2016, was also recently inducted into the school&#8217;s Sport Hall of Honour.<\/p>\n<p>Staff and students watched recordings of her moguls run in the library and holding their own mini\u2013Olympics in the gym to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The kids are really engaged\u2026 they see that she was once here, and it makes them think, I could do that too,&#8221; Morish said.<\/p>\n<p>Former teacher Gary\u202fCrowle, who taught Anthony humanities, remembered her as diligent, respectful, and quietly determined even as a teenager balancing schoolwork and international training.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She was studious and driven\u2026 even when she was away, she got her work sent through,&#8221; Crowle said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The college supported her dream while helping her stay on track academically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/02\/Jakara6_89399.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students participated in a mini-Olympics in PE including a moguls-inspired activity. Photo: NYAH BARNES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said Anthony&#8217;s humility has remained unchanged despite her worldwide success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I ran into her once at Waurn\u202fPonds, and she still said, &#8216;Hello, Mr\u202fCrowle,&#8217; as if no time had passed,&#8221; he recalled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s achieved so much and yet stayed grounded\u2026 that&#8217;s what makes her special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jakara&#8217;s achievements continue to inspire new generations across the campus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted an event that reminds our community that love, effort, and perseverance still count,&#8221; Morish said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jakara shows that from this little corner of the Bellarine, you can go anywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whether through snow-suit designs or classroom discussions, Jakara Day reminded students that champions are raised right here on the Bellarine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STUDENTS at Geelong Christian College Bellarine Campus adorned their uniforms with green and gold on Tuesday to celebrate Jakara Day in tribute to Olympic gold medallist and former student Jakara Anthony.
