Photo: Supplied<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her own church lacks a centre aisle, a feature many couples still associate with the classic &#8220;walk down the aisle&#8221; moment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we could do is they could walk down one aisle and leave by the other aisle,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Eller&#8217;s wife, Reverend Jeanne Beale of St Albans-St Andrews Uniting Church in Geelong, said many couples picture a dramatic entrance that modern reception venues or outdoor settings can more easily provide.<\/p>\n<p>For some same gender couples, she said, churches can carry painful associations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They tend not to want to utilise church buildings because the church has been a great source of pain,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I have been blessed to marry several same gender couples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/PORTARLINGTONUNITING_91035.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reverend Karen Eller, minister at Portarlington Uniting Church (pictured) said some venues simply no longer suit a traditional wedding layout, and sometimes couples are striving for a particular wedding aesthetic. Photo: Karen Eller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Still, some communities hold tightly to tradition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Polynesian weddings are more likely to be in a church,&#8221; Beale said, citing the &#8220;stronger faith connection&#8221; among the younger Polynesian generations.<\/p>\n<p>Practical factors play a role too. Hosting weddings can add weeks of work for ministry teams, Reverend David Willsher of Bellarine Anglican Churches said.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, for couples, marrying in a church often costs far less than commercial venues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The celebrant fee will be much less&#8230; it&#8217;s a ministry to the couple to establish them in a good godly marriage,&#8221; Reverend Willsher said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/Drysdale_05780.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">While fewer weddings are taking place within churches, many people are still enjoying traditional ceremonies in less traditional locations. Photo: NYAH BARNE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Church ceremonies also follow set religious rites, a limitation for couples wanting custom vows or non-religious elements.<\/p>\n<p>Still, ministers like Eller remain open.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll marry anyone if I&#8217;m satisfied there&#8217;s a real commitment to be married,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>While fewer weddings take place within church walls, the sentiment endures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re connecting with a long history,&#8221; Willsher said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a place of permanence&#8230; reminding people of God&#8217;s permanence.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FEWER couples are choosing church weddings, as changing traditions and new preferences reshape how Australians say &#8220;I do&#8221;.
