I was delighted to attend the launch of the Bellarine Arts Centre’s 2026 season recently, as chair of the venue’s Community Asset Committee.<\/p>\n

The event was also an important moment for the much-loved venue as we officially lifted the curtain on its new identity as the Bellarine Arts Centre.<\/p>\n

Many residents will still know the venue as the Potato Shed and that history remains an important part of its story.<\/p>\n

For 25 years the centre has been the Bellarine’s home of the arts and locals constantly remind me how much they value the facility.<\/p>\n

This year’s program has been carefully curated and includes a mix of theatre, music and family entertainment that will appeal to a wide range of audiences.<\/p>\n

The season was recently kicked off by musician Ben Lee, who performed an outside show on the amphitheatre stage.<\/p>\n

Concert-goers enjoyed a relaxed evening on the lawns with picnic rugs and baskets and bopped along to classics from his widely successful Awake is the New Sleep album, which celebrated its 20th Anniversary last year.<\/p>\n

Later in March, award-winning regional theatre company Skin of Our Teeth Productions will perform The Deplorables, an uplifting musical inspired by the true story of two women’s cricket teams who challenged societal expectations in Bendigo in 1874.<\/p>\n

In April, music lovers can also look forward to The Australian Barbra Streisand Show, featuring singing sensation Rachael Grace, accompanied by her incredible band, performing songs from the sensational catalogue of Streisand’s classic films, musicals and hit records.<\/p>\n

During the next school holidays, families can enjoy Farmy Farm \u2013 described as The Castle meets Babe, the show promises plenty of laughs alongside jaw dropping acrobatics. For those looking for a classic, there’s also a performance of Hansel and Gretel.<\/p>\n

Both shows will offer relaxed performances to ensure the experience is welcoming and accessible for everyone.<\/p>\n

As well as providing a standout program of shows each year, the Bellarine Arts Centre fills a vital role as a launching pad for our region’s young performers.<\/p>\n

Every week, the venue supports local schools, dance groups, musicians, theatre companies and community organisations to learn, rehearse and perform.<\/p>\n

It is not unusual to see students arriving for rehearsals in the afternoon while community groups prepare for evening performances.<\/p>\n

Those experiences help build confidence in young people and strengthen the creative life of our region.<\/p>\n

As demand continues to grow, so too does the need to plan carefully for the future of this well-used community facility.<\/p>\n

Council is progressing a redevelopment business case and master plan that includes a second larger theatre, improved backstage and technical facilities, and expanded learning spaces.<\/p>\n

We are advocating to the Victorian and Australian governments for a $36 million investment to help make that vision a reality.<\/p>\n

This is about ensuring local performers and audiences have access to quality facilities close to home rather than needing to travel elsewhere.<\/p>\n

It is also about recognising the role arts and culture play in community wellbeing, local identity and economic activity across the Bellarine.<\/p>\n

The Bellarine Arts Centre has always been a place where people come together and with the right support it will continue to be for many years to come.<\/p>\n
