KRISTY Kayler-Thomson is a registered nurse who believes business can be built with heart when it begins with people.<\/p>\n

Her decision to launch Nurse Next Door Geelong in 2023 was shaped as much by family experience as it was by professional ambition.<\/p>\n

During the pandemic, Kristy watched her grandparents move from home into residential care and saw how quickly independence can change when familiar routines, comforts and connections are disrupted.<\/p>\n

“Knowing they didn’t want to be there made me realise there are options out there,” she said. “If we can keep people in their homes, if they wish to, for as long as they wish to, it’s nicer for everyone.”<\/p>\n

That belief in choice has stayed with her, and it is personal. With her father living with multiple sclerosis (MS), the idea of home is not abstract, it is a promise many families quietly make to one another.<\/p>\n

Kristy’s motivation is to ensure people have access to support that protects dignity, independence and quality of life, without losing the things that make life feel like home.<\/p>\n

For her, it is about what is possible when care adapts to the person, rather than the person having to adapt to a system.<\/p>\n

Kristy has spent over 18 years in nursing, including 16 years at Geelong Hospital on the neuro stroke, gastro and renal ward. That clinical grounding shapes how she leads, with steady judgement and attention to the moments that matter most.<\/p>\n

“Making lives better is our core purpose but it also means doing the little things to put a smile on someone’s face,” she said. “It could be as simple as noticing a client has nail polish in their bathroom and asking ‘Would you like me to paint your nails?'”<\/p>\n

It is a philosophy grounded in positivity and empowering people to stay connected to who they are.<\/p>\n

Kristy describes the work as “bringing the joy back into our clients’ lives”, often by helping them return to interests they thought they had lost.<\/p>\n

One client, after a stroke, could no longer cross stitch, even though her home was filled with her work.<\/p>\n

“We’ve come up with a bigger space for cross stitching and encourage her to start little by little,” Kristy said.<\/p>\n

That purpose has translated into growth. Starting with one client on day one, Nurse Next Door Geelong now supports people across Geelong with a team of more than 60 people and growing.<\/p>\n

Kristy leads a care team that includes a care designer, another registered nurse who helps oversee all care plans, enrolled nurses and caregivers.<\/p>\n

She said the culture is built on Nurse Next Door’s values: admire people, ‘wow’ customer experience, find a better way, and passionate about making a difference.<\/p>\n
