{"id":117489,"date":"2026-03-13T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=117489"},"modified":"2026-03-11T17:40:43","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T06:40:43","slug":"local-family-adopts-kitten-injured-in-january-bushfires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/local-family-adopts-kitten-injured-in-january-bushfires\/","title":{"rendered":"Local family adopts kitten injured in January bushfires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A KITTEN found injured in northern Victoria after the January bushfires has found a new home with a local family.<\/p>\n<p>The young cat, now named Toast, lives in Clifton Springs with veterinary receptionist Genna Burns, her husband Patrick \u2013 who is a firefighter with Fire Rescue Victoria \u2013 and their 11-year-old son Harvey.<\/p>\n<p>Toast was discovered on a fire-ravaged property in the Murray Valley region, where wildlife rescuers and veterinary staff were searching through the ruins for surviving animals.<\/p>\n<p>He was found alongside a sibling, both with severe burns to their paws and bodies. While Toast survived, his sister later died from her injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Toast was treated at a nearby veterinary clinic, where Genna&#8217;s sister-in-law works. When he was well enough to travel, the Burns family offered him a home.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/Smokeythecat12_66412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1799\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Despite his difficult start, Toast quickly settled into family life. Photo: Michael Chambers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Toast arrived still recovering from burns to his paws, his legs, rump and the tips of his ears, as well as smoke-related damage to his airway.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He has some long-lasting damage to his airway, so he has a funny purr on him,&#8221; Genna said. &#8220;That&#8217;s due to some long-term scarring from inhaling smoke and probably the fire itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His name came easily.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His full government name on his microchip is Toast Burns,&#8221; Genna said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his difficult start, Toast quickly settled into family life and as his paws healed, his personality began to emerge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s got no fear whatsoever,&#8221; Genna said. &#8220;He chases after the dogs and chases after the cats and gets amongst everything and wants to be friends with everybody.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/Smokeythecat14_66461.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toast likes to keep close to the action. Photo: Michael Chambers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The energetic kitten has also formed a close bond with Harvey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They play basketball together in his room. He&#8217;s got a little mini basketball hoop\u2026and they chase each other around. They&#8217;re absolutely best friends,&#8221; Genna said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s fit in so well with our family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now about four months old, Toast likes to keep close to the action \u2013 often perched on someone&#8217;s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>He has also become a familiar face at the Armstrong Creek Veterinary Practice, where Genna works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He comes in with me sometimes and sits up at reception,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He&#8217;s become a bit of a local celebrity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The only thing we need to keep an eye on is his airway and his breathing. But other than that, you wouldn&#8217;t know.
