{"id":117855,"date":"2026-03-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=117855"},"modified":"2026-04-07T20:30:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T10:30:54","slug":"final-plans-released-for-st-leonards-pier-rebuild","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/final-plans-released-for-st-leonards-pier-rebuild\/","title":{"rendered":"Final plans released for St Leonards Pier rebuild"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final design for the St Leonards Pier rebuild was released on Tuesday this week.<\/p>\n<p>While the pier&#8217;s larger footprint and revised layout were confirmed last year, the final design introduces a series of external refinements shaped by community feedback.<\/p>\n<p>These include curved and bench seating positioned to face the bay, wheelchair-accessible fishing platforms and expanded deck space near Sirens kiosk and the pier&#8217;s entrance to enhance its social use.<\/p>\n<p>A low landing will provide improved access for boaters, divers and snorkellers, while fishing rod holders and interpretive signage highlighting maritime history and marine life have also been added.<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 submissions were received during the final phase of community consultation on the project, which ran between October and November last year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/StLeonardsPier_rende_23805.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"458\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An artist&#8217;s impression of the new-look St Leonards pier. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne said the design aimed to improve the pier&#8217;s access and usability.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We listened to community feedback and developed a new pier design that protects local heritage while creating a contemporary space for the community to gather, fish, learn and connect with the bay,&#8221; Horne said.<\/p>\n<p>The new pier&#8217;s alignment has been informed by technical and heritage assessments, with the structure offset from the existing pier to avoid nearby shipwrecks and archaeological material.<\/p>\n<p>The finalised design does not include any changes to the existing breakwall, an issue consistently raised by the community throughout consultation.<\/p>\n<p>Some locals have argued the deteriorating structure should be repaired or reinforced alongside the pier rebuild to improve shelter and safety for vessels during storms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/StLeonardsPier_rende_23849.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"802\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The final design for the project includes an expanded deck space near Sirens kiosk and the pier\u2019s entrance to enhance its social use. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Questions about the condition of the breakwall, its potential impact on the new pier and these community concerns were put to the Victorian government but were not addressed.<\/p>\n<p>Bellarine MP Alison Marchant said the rebuild was about &#8220;more than infrastructure&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;St Leonards Pier plays a significant role in the local community, which is why we are investing in this upgrade to rebuild this much-loved pier,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about creating a safe, inclusive and vibrant community place that locals and visitors will enjoy for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thank the St Leonards community for their important feedback to help shape this project and are working hard to make sure this landmark can be enjoyed for years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The final design for the St Leonards Pier rebuild was released on Tuesday this week.
