{"id":118800,"date":"2026-04-04T18:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-04T07:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/suns-out-sold-out-community-backs-leagues-newest-competitors\/"},"modified":"2026-04-04T18:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T07:22:14","slug":"suns-out-sold-out-community-backs-leagues-newest-competitors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/suns-out-sold-out-community-backs-leagues-newest-competitors\/","title":{"rendered":"Suns out, sold out: community backs league&#8217;s newest competitors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in four decades new blood has joined the Bellarine Football Netball League.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands packed into Banyul-Warri Fields on Saturday to celebrate the Surf Coast Suns&#8217; first games in the league.<\/p>\n<p>After founding as a junior club in 2016, the Suns have progressed to field a team in every netball and football grade from juniors to seniors.<\/p>\n<p>They opened their senior campaign in style with a local derby against Torquay.<\/p>\n<p>Club vice-president Warrick De Vercelli said the support from the community had been overwhelming in the best possible way.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on other senior games he has attended in the region, he said he could not think of another regular season crowd that was so large.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s massive \u2013 there&#8217;s been a huge build up to this point [and] a few years of work, so regardless of the results on field we&#8217;re just rapt to get out there and be a part of it,&#8221; De Vercelli said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The amount of people who have put their time in today is amazing. The prep work that we&#8217;ve had to do to get to this point is massive and that&#8217;s due to all the people who are helping out from the community and around the club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re really proud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/IMG_3082_19516.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scott and Marnie Cayzer with daughter Beth (9) at the Surf Coast Suns first senior games. Photo: Tahlia Sinclair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A-grade netball player Abbey Sutherland, who has returned to netball for the first time since high school, said the support around the club had been phenomenal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never been a part of a club&#8217;s inaugural team before, so it&#8217;s awesome,&#8221; Sutherland said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously a really big lead up, which is exciting, but it also brings nerves and a bit of jitters on the court as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s nice to get the first game out of the way and then we can just get into practice and work away on what we need to work on and look forward to next week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite a disappointing result on-field, first grade football co-captain Joss Howlett thanked the people who came out to support them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A massive thank you, thanks for the support and for the army of people who got behind us,&#8221; Howlett said.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the boundary, the buzz was just as strong.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/IMG_3078_19573.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kirsty De Vercelli manned a very busy merch tent at the Surf Coast Suns first senior home game. Photo: Tahlia Sinclair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kirsty De Vercelli was stationed in the merchandise tent and quickly sold out of supporter scarves.<\/p>\n<p>She said sales were steady throughout the day with scarves and beanies being snapped up early. It wasn&#8217;t just Surf Coast locals getting in on the Suns action, but visitors from as far as Maffra and Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We sold out of scarves really, really quickly and everything else is selling like hotcakes,&#8221; De Vercelli said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone has been in a really good mood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>De Vercelli joined the club with her husband and sons while they were juniors.
