{"id":118948,"date":"2026-04-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=118948"},"modified":"2026-04-16T19:26:36","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T09:26:36","slug":"bellarines-newest-team-taking-the-competition-by-the-horns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/bellarines-newest-team-taking-the-competition-by-the-horns\/","title":{"rendered":"Bellarine&#8217;s newest team taking the competition by the horns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Portarlington Football Netball Club isn&#8217;t entering the 2026 season quietly.<\/p>\n<p>After announcing their intention to form a senior women&#8217;s team in early 2025, the club has been working tirelessly to ensure they take the field this season.<\/p>\n<p>Not only will they be playing, but head coach Sarah Perrott also has them playing top division football.<\/p>\n<p>It is a decision that was calculated to ensure women on the Bellarine have the best possible access to the sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have a false sense of confidence in everything I do, so [nominating for division 1] is very on brand for me,&#8221; Perrott said.<\/p>\n<p>Several factors were considered when nominating the team and attracting quality players was a key factor.<\/p>\n<p>Watching the group come together over their long pre-season, Perrott said it was clear the cohort has strong football foundations.<\/p>\n<p>With many players moving between Bellarine clubs and through the Peninsula Sharks, she is proud to have a place locally for these girls to play their senior football.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, a lot of the division 1 teams are in the middle of Geelong, so I do feel like there&#8217;s not as many options for talented female footy players in the Bellarine,&#8221; Perrott said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just wanted to actually offer the talented girls that I know that are on the Bellarine an opportunity to come back somewhere local, somewhere close to them, and I didn&#8217;t want us to miss out or make those girls not feel like they could come to us because it wasn&#8217;t an opportunity to play in division 1.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/PortFBWomensAGradePr_30938.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"970\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portarlington Football Club&#8217;s inaugural women&#8217;s football side will play top grade in 2026. Photo: Michael Chambers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The second one was that the girls that we have had come to us, because they&#8217;re so young. They&#8217;re very lucky because they haven&#8217;t been the type of girls that have ever been told they can&#8217;t play footy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve all been able to play through their juniors, play for the Sharks, all that sort of thing, so all of them actually have really, really strong fundamental skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Coaching this season, Perrott said, will be focusing on game structure and football smarts, rather than needing to drill into the nitty gritty of how to perform the skills required to play football with every player.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s something that has her excited for the year.<\/p>\n<p>Looking into the season her big goal is not a premiership \u2013 though she is confident the team will have an edge at their large homefield \u2013 but maintaining player numbers into 2027.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My biggest thing is just retention,&#8221; Perrott said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our measures of success will be more so if at the end of the season we can keep these girls playing footy. If we can entice more girls in the area to continue to play footy, to enjoy it and want to commit for the next seasons, that&#8217;s going to be a really good measure for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perrott said she is working with players at the individual level to achieve their goals whether they are contained within the club or extend to playing higher levels of football.<\/p>\n<p>With the group of players she is working with, Perrott is confident there will be plenty of goals reached this season.<\/p>\n<p>Portarlington play their debut game against Barwon Heads on 18 April at Howard Harmer Oval.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Portarlington Football Netball Club isn&#8217;t entering the 2026 season quietly.
