{"id":119209,"date":"2026-04-21T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=119209"},"modified":"2026-04-21T10:51:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T00:51:38","slug":"woodwork-building-friendships-in-st-leonards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/woodwork-building-friendships-in-st-leonards\/","title":{"rendered":"Woodwork building friendships in St Leonards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FROM customised dog planter boxes to wooden pens and bird boxes, the St Leonards Men&#8217;s Shed has become a lively and valued part of the local community.<\/p>\n<p>But the group&#8217;s beginnings were far more modest.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, the group started as a men&#8217;s cooking class, sharing kitchen space while its members worked to secure funding.<\/p>\n<p>That changed in 2014 when a $50,000 grant from the Victorian government allowed the kitchen to be extended into a workshop, officially establishing the St Leonards Men&#8217;s Shed.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary Shane McManus said the relationships between members, and the support they offer each other, are among the shed&#8217;s greatest strengths.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The camaraderie is a big thing\u2026 the way they always look after each other,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/StLeonardsMensShed-N_34957.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The shed works with many community groups and organisations, including regularly making bird boxes for Landcare. Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fellow member Taras Mikulin said the shed also plays an important role in supporting wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on his healthcare background, he leads regular health talks as part of the group&#8217;s wellbeing program. These sessions, introduced in 2020, are consistently well attended.<\/p>\n<p>Mikulin joined in 2015 with little woodwork experience but plenty of curiosity, quickly finding his place among the group.<\/p>\n<p>For others, like Peter Smits, the impact has been even more profound.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/StLeonardsMensShed-N_35007.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The shed is soon to be extended, giving more room for the equipment and the high turnout of men in the workshop each day. Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He describes joining the men&#8217;s shed as &#8220;the best thing I ever did&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>That sense of belonging continues to draw new members, with more than 20 people often working side by side, stretching the limits of the current space.<\/p>\n<p>A recent council grant will fund an expansion of the workshop to accommodate the growing demand.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond St Leonards, the group stays connected to the broader men&#8217;s shed network, with members taking an annual road trip to visit other sheds and share ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Projects vary widely, from heritage window restorations to handcrafted mahjong boards, giving members the chance to both share and build new skills. Wherever possible, recycled materials are used.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the workshop is filled with animal-shaped planter boxes, a project that has taken on a life of its own.<\/p>\n<p>The idea began as a small school program making eight dogs but quickly sparked wider interest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" style=\"font-size: inherit; font-weight: bold;\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/StLeonardsMensShed-N_35048.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Most men begin at the shed by creating a pen.
