{"id":119258,"date":"2026-04-21T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=119258"},"modified":"2026-04-21T13:36:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T03:36:22","slug":"classic-childrens-book-gets-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/classic-childrens-book-gets-a\/","title":{"rendered":"Classic children&#8217;s book gets a musical twist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELOVED Australian children&#8217;s book The Wrong Book will find the right stage in July, with a new musical adaptation set to premiere at Geelong Arts Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Written by author Nick Bland, the story has been reimagined by Geelong local Ruth McGurk, who rediscovered the book in 2021 while reading to her children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I remember thinking, this is such a great book and it would make a great stage show, because there&#8217;s just so much room for chaos,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>McGurk studied theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and has written and performed works around the country.<\/p>\n<p>The idea to adapt The Wrong Book for the stage, she said, had been &#8220;bubbling away&#8221; since her return to performing, after several years focused on family life.<\/p>\n<p>Once she secured approval from the book&#8217;s publisher, Scholastic, she got to work assembling a team who could help bring the story to life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/MammaMia13561_63568.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Loxton (left) who performed alongside Ruth McGurk (right) in Mamma Mia last year, will perform the lead role of Nicholas in The Wrong Book Show. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Directing an entirely local cast and crew will be James Lee, who was McGurk and Loxton&#8217;s director in Mamma Mia.<\/p>\n<p>McGurk hopes the show appeals just as much to adults as it does to kids.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First and foremost, it&#8217;s a kids show,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But I&#8217;m really hoping the grownups are going to be laughing along and having just as good a time as the kids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McGurk has also written original music for the show, adding new depth to Bland&#8217;s tale.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love the way adding music helps the audience understand what you&#8217;re going for even before any lyrics are sung,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Wrong Book Show will be staged at Geelong Arts Centre on 8 and 9 July.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BELOVED Australian children&#8217;s book The Wrong Book will find the right stage in July, with a new musical adaptation set to premiere at Geelong Arts Centre.
