The team at MexiCam’s are hopeful of quickly “moving onwards and upwards” after a fire at the venue in the Federal Mills precinct in North Geelong last night.<\/p>\n

More than 100 people were evacuated from MexiCams, a Mexican restaurant and part of Hamo Hospitality, the hospitality arm of the Hamilton Group.<\/p>\n

Hamo Hospitality operations manager Jeremy Drummond said all patrons and staff were safe.<\/p>\n

“Our team last night did a great job,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We were lucky we were busy on a Tuesday night but the guys acted quickly and calmly and made sure everyone was safe and well outside.”<\/p>\n

Drummond said some remedial works would take place but he did not yet have an exact timeline for when MexiCam’s would fully reopen.<\/p>\n

“I’d estimate a couple of weeks and we’ll be back on our feet,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mexicam’s has reached out to all bookings from last night as well as future bookings for this week.<\/p>\n

“We’re lucky we have alternate venues we can offer alternatives to people within the group,” Drummond said.<\/p>\n

“As I said, we’re lucky enough to be busy on a Tuesday night – hospitality’s tough – and we had 150 people booked last night so it’s sad we couldn’t give them all the experience they wanted, it’s also a good position to be in to have the demand.”<\/p>\n

Other Hamo Hospitality venues include the 1915 Restaurant and Bar and Paddock Bakery, both at Federal Mills; the Retreat Restaurant and Bar in Newtown; and the Woolstore Restaurant and Bar in Newtown.<\/p>\n

Drummond said the $2 Taco Tuesdays had proven popular at MexiCam’s since it opened, and that offer could pop up in the next couple of weeks at a Hamo Hospitality venue or possibly elsewhere.<\/p>\n

MexiCam’s is also catering the Lucha Fantastica wrestling in Geelong West on 16 May.<\/p>\n

“[The fire] is a rocky spot in a very long road, so it’ll all be onwards and upwards for us,” Drummond said.<\/p>\n

“The response to Taco Tuesday and the venue in general has been great, we’ve just ticked over six months’ operation.”<\/p>\n

Looking ahead a little, Drummond said Hamo Hospitality was working on an event at the 1915 restaurant involving all five of its venues as part of the Tastes of Geelong festival at the end of June.<\/p>\n

“That’ll be a collaboration between our five chefs to design a menu around local produce and tell a bit of the story of the history of the sites in which our venues are: the Federal Mills building, the Woolstore, and the old post office in Newtown,” he said.<\/p>\n
