Geelong’s young people in need of urgent care have been given a boost in Labor’s 2026\u201327 state budget, with $20.3 million to go towards improving the children’s emergency department at University Hospital Geelong.<\/p>\n

The funding is part of $284 million to open and expand more hospitals in outer metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, and also includes $13.2 million over four years for the transfer of palliative care beds from the McKellar Centre to Anam Cara House.<\/p>\n

The budget contains no new money or details about the Torquay Community Hospital but Labor says it still intends to build the hospital at some point.<\/p>\n

Minister for health Harriet Shing visited University Hospital Geelong earlier today to make the pre-budget announcement alongside Labor candidate for South Barwon, Rebecca Thistleton, and Member for Western Victorian Gayle Tierney.<\/p>\n

The group toured the children’s ED and special care nursery with Barwon Health chief executive Frances Diver and chair of the Barwon Health board Lisa Neville.<\/p>\n

Barwon Health deputy director of emergency medicine Elleanor Lee said the lighting and the design of the new ED, which opened in December 2024,<\/a> had been an immense benefit for children and their families.<\/p>\n

“One of the beautiful spaces when they come in is the dedicated waiting room. It’s a really children-friendly space where they can interact with the video board on the wall.<\/p>\n

“We have a low stimulation room, for example, and many families take advantage of that even without us prompting them because they realise that’s a space they’ll be comfortable in.<\/p>\n

“It’s also made a huge difference to staff wellbeing.”<\/p>\n

Thistleton said she could personally attest to the quality of care at the children’s ED after visiting when her daughter got a bead lodged in her ear that required treatment by an ENT (ear nose and throat) specialist.<\/p>\n

“We were so surprised we were able to see someone so quickly.<\/p>\n

“It’s fantastic for people living around the growing parts of Mount Duneed and Armstrong Creek to know the services their families rely on are here when they need them, 24 hours a day.”<\/p>\n

The Torquay Community Hospital was a Labor election commitment from 2018 that remains unbuilt.<\/a><\/p>\n

Shing said the demographics of how and where healthcare was used had changed since Labor made its commitment to community hospitals, such as a lift in online, remote and virtual care.<\/p>\n

“Demand has increased in some areas and not increased to the same extent in others,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We will continue to develop and deliver all of the community hospitals that we have made as part of that commitment.”<\/p>\n

Shing said the Victorian government had continued to make investments in health in Geelong, including IVF treatments.<\/a><\/p>\n

“This is about making sure that with the cost of living, the increase in private services costs, we are not forcing people to make a decision of paying the bills on one hand and starting a family with the other,” she said.<\/p>\n

“This is a health care budget that is all about people.”<\/p>\n

Neville said the area served by Barwon Health was the fastest-growing region in the country.<\/p>\n

“So to see further investment in paediatric services, in outpatients, in surgery, in IVF, is really about meeting the needs of our community and ensuring we’re here and able to continue to grow our services.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
