A HOME upgrade program that has already changed lives across the Geelong region is being rolled out to reach even more vulnerable households.<\/p>\n

Geelong Sustainability has launched Climate Cosy Rooms, the second phase of its Climate Safe Rooms pilot.<\/p>\n

The free home upgrade program supports low-income households living with chronic health conditions across the City of Greater Geelong and Colac Otway Shire, helping improve comfort, reduce energy bills and better manage health year-round.<\/p>\n

It is aimed at households where extreme heat or cold poses a serious health risk.<\/p>\n

Upgrades can include ceiling, underfloor and wall insulation, draught sealing, external blinds or shutters, and replacing draughty light fittings.<\/p>\n

Ian and Val participated in Climate Safe Rooms late last year. They are both now vocal advocates for its importance after experiencing the difference the upgrades have made to their daily lives.<\/p>\n

“It’s life-changing,” Ian said.<\/p>\n

“It took a lot of worry away from us. Particularly going into this summer, knowing that we’ve got adequate things that are working properly.<\/p>\n

“We’re very happy with it all.”<\/p>\n

Val, who lives with a chronic health condition, said the improvements had made a significant difference.<\/p>\n

“We’ve got nothing but praise for Geelong Sustainability, the tradesmen, everyone involved,” she said.<\/p>\n

After an application is received, Geelong Sustainability assesses each home to identify comfort and energy issues before installing the most effective upgrades at no cost to eligible participants.<\/p>\n

The goal is to create at least one Climate Cosy Room that remains safe and comfortable during summer heatwaves and winter cold snaps.<\/p>\n

Geelong Sustainability co-chief executive Karina Donkers said the pilot delivered strong outcomes beyond temperature control.<\/p>\n

“Not just in terms of participants experiencing warmer winters and cooler summers in their homes, but with increased health, savings on energy bills and improved wellbeing that participants experience,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Climate Cosy Rooms takes everything we’ve learned and makes it available to even more people who deserve this support.<\/p>\n

“With the increase of extreme weather from the impacts of climate change, we need to see these programs significantly scaled up so that no low-income household with a chronic health condition has to go without a safe and comfortable home.”<\/p>\n

Applicants must live in the City of Greater Geelong or Colac Otway Shire, hold a healthcare card and have a household member with a chronic health condition making them vulnerable to heat or cold, supported by a letter from a registered medical practitioner. They must also plan to remain in the home for at least two years.<\/p>\n

The program is open to owner-occupiers and private rental properties including not-for-profit landlords. Public housing is not eligible.<\/p>\n
