Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His early postings, including in Castlemaine and Joyce&#8217;s Creek, were at one-teacher schools, where he honed his teaching skills.<\/p>\n<p>A keen athlete at the time, standing at an impressive 1.93m (6ft 4in), Davis was also a prized recruit for local football clubs and played until he was almost 40.<\/p>\n<p>Father to six children \u2013 two daughters and four sons \u2013 Davis met his late wife while staying at a guest house.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were two young girls in the lounge playing Chinese Checkers. I said, &#8216;Can I join in?'&#8221; Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It turned out one of the girls that was there had just had her birthday. I happened to say I just had my birthday and she said &#8216;So have I&#8217;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120389\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120389\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-120389\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/05\/0a1a8d63-129f-48c4-9_47950-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"671\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harold Davis at his son&#8217;s house in 2024. Eventually we got together and we were married.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pair were married for just shy of 50 years before Alice passed away in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Their eldest daughter, Allyson \u2013 named after actress June Allyson \u2013 had long hoped for a sister.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Allyson had been the first, and she wasn&#8217;t very happy about all the boys coming,&#8221; Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After having four boys, a sister came along, and she got her wish in the end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From television and home phones to mobile phones, Davis has watched technology evolve dramatically across his lifetime.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120390\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120390\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-120390\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/05\/55056c3f-fb36-435f-b_47965-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"625\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harold Davis at the Barwon Heads Bowling Club in 2015. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While he has tried to keep pace, he admits some of the more recent developments have passed him by.<\/p>\n<p>What he has not missed though is the rapid expansion of the Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I first came to Barwon Heads it was a sleepy little hollow,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been interesting. We had some friends down here and we used to go out fishing down the river.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of my friends have passed on now. Photo: supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Still living at home, with support from his daughter Linda, Davis said he has had a very enjoyable life.<\/p>\n<p>As for the secret to making it to triple digits, he did not hesitate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The secret is to never smoke,&#8221; Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anybody that smokes, they don&#8217;t need to worry about getting to 100.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Davis will celebrate his birthday on Sunday 17 May with a gathering of his friends and family from across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BARWON Heads will gain a new centenarian this weekend when Harold Davis celebrates his 100th birthday.
