Photo: Nigel Skurrie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The traditional Scottish event will feature alongside other feats of strength including the hammer throw, stone put and weight over bar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Highland heavy events originated in the Scottish Highlands and are believed to date back more than 1,000 years,&#8221; Vic Highland Heavy Events secretary Colin Newman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tradition says early Scottish kings held strength competitions to identify the strongest warriors and messengers, with events such as stone throwing, hammer throwing and caber tossing testing power, balance and athletic skill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/IMG_20260519_140555_56728.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fran Fitzpatrick-Sandford picking up for caber toss. Photo: Nigel Skurrie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the events may appear straightforward, the strength required to not only lift the implements but then propel them forward is immense.<\/p>\n<p>Newman said the atmosphere at Portarlington is always special.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do a show and tell where we walk around with some of the implements and get people to hold them \u2013 not throw them \u2013 just to understand how heavy these things are,&#8221; Newman said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/IMG_20260519_140557_56713.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Craig Harrison throwing weight for distance. Photo: Nigel Skurrie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen athletes will compete in the championships, with the eldest competitor, Marty Glea, an impressive 70 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong&#8217;s Matthew Batt and Corio&#8217;s Nigel Skurrie will be in action, with Skurrie preparing for the Australian Open Men&#8217;s Championship in October.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, competition stalwart Fran Fitzpatrick-Sandford \u2013 who remains undefeated since women started competing in Australia \u2013 will be looking to break some world records.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/IMG_20260519_140601_56745.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colin Newman throwing weight for distance. Photo: Nigel Skurrie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Newman said Highland heavy events attracted competitors from a wide range of sporting backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of our athletes come from a track and field background,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of throwers from athletics that compete with us and strongmen often come and compete too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also have someone who got involved with us through Highland dancing.
