{"id":120758,"date":"2026-05-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=120758"},"modified":"2026-05-20T22:17:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T12:17:22","slug":"record-breaking-run-headlines-festival-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/record-breaking-run-headlines-festival-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Record-breaking run headlines festival weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIRST timers, charity runners and new mums are among the 11,000 people who crossed the finish line at this year&#8217;s Great Ocean Road Running Festival.<\/p>\n<p>It takes a big event to shut down the Great Ocean Road and event director Brad King said he does not take that responsibility lightly.<\/p>\n<p>Building an event that centres and celebrates the communities along the coast is at the core of his work.<\/p>\n<p>With races spanning from the 1.5km Kids Gallop to the 60km Ultra Marathon, runners of all ages and abilities took part across the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>King said crossing the finish line can be emotional for runners and spectators alike.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s super special,&#8221; King said. &#8220;It&#8217;s actually quite emotional seeing people come through. It doesn&#8217;t matter what distance you&#8217;re doing, everyone has a story, everyone has a journey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/17-5-2026_GORM_SUN_N_21960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Full marathon runners line up ready to begin their race. Photo: Great Ocean Road Running Festival.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Among the standout performances was Meriem Daoui&#8217;s marathon victory.<\/p>\n<p>The Moroccan-born Tasmanian broke a course record that had stood since 2007, crossing the line in 2 hours, 57 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Daoui competed in her first marathon at age 16 and has continued running ever since. Her sub-three-hour performance came just 10 months after giving birth.<\/p>\n<p>In a social media post after the race, she said the run was for her younger self, for people living with chronic illness and for parents learning to balance new responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, I walked away with the women&#8217;s course record set in 2007, and a win,&#8221; Daoui wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But most importantly, I walked away with a heart full of gratitude, love and appreciation for my family, friends and the running community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/17-5-2026_GORM_SUN_N_21971.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crowds line the last 100m of the course. Photo: Great Ocean Road Running Festival.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I truly would not be here without their endless love and support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>King said the festival&#8217;s success relied heavily on local support.<\/p>\n<p>Whether volunteering, fundraising or cheering runners along the route, he said the backing from communities along the coast helped make the event what it was.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The community&#8217;s at the heart of this event and they&#8217;re fully a part of the family,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Runners at this year&#8217;s Great Ocean Road Running Festival raised more than $120,000 for 283 charities, including support for the Apollo Bay &amp; District Health Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Across the second day of racing, Daoui and Dion Finocchiaro claimed the full marathon titles, while Frances Arnott and Ben Chamberlain won the half marathon.
