VICTORIANS who paid their vehicle registration in the past year have until 31 July to claim a rebate worth up to $372.<\/p>\n
Applications for the 20 per cent registration rebate opened on Monday, as part of a state government package aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures.<\/p>\n
Eligible motorists can claim the rebate on up to two vehicles.<\/p>\n
To qualify, Victorians must have paid registration for a light vehicle used for personal purposes between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026.<\/p>\n
More than one million applications were lodged within days of the scheme opening, with demand briefly overwhelming the Service Victoria website on Monday.<\/p>\n
The rebate was introduced in response to rising motorist costs linked to conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
The start of June also marked the return of paid fares across Victoria’s public transport network after several months of free travel.<\/p>\n
Fares have been reinstated at half their usual cost, with daily travel capped at $5.70 for the remainder of the year.<\/p>\n
The return of fares has also coincided with the resumption of the tap-and-go trial on the Craigieburn, Upfield, Ballarat and Seymour train lines, allowing passengers to use a credit or debit card instead of a myki.<\/p>\n
Travel for children under 18 remains permanently free.<\/p>\n
The state government estimates the half-price fares could save a regular commuter about $850 over the next six months.<\/p>\n
