GEELONG’S Back to Back Theatre will be moving to Paris for eight weeks later this year to be one of the major performers at a French showcase of the contemporary arts.<\/p>\n

Selected as a Portrait artist in this year’s Festival d’Automne \u00e0 Paris, the company will present five of its works multiple times over the extended residency.<\/p>\n

Back to Back Theatre is the first Australian artist chosen for Portrait status in the festival, which is one of the world’s most important contemporary festivals.<\/p>\n

Taking place from September to January each year, The Festival d’Automne \u00e0 Paris presents more than 80 events in 60 venues across Paris and the surrounding region and attracts global audiences of about 250,000 people.<\/p>\n

As a Portrait artist, Back To Back Theatre’s works will be a festival within themselves, offering a unique opportunity to gain insight into an artist’s creative practice and evolution.<\/p>\n

Back to Back will present its works Food Court, Small Metal Objects, Ganesh Versus the Third Reich, Radial, and Neanderthal: Histoire(s) du Th\u00e9\u00e2tre VIII as well as hosting masterclasses, workshops, and public discussions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“In Geelong and other cultural epicentres of Australia we have some kind of fame but in Paris we are going to be on some pretty big stages that will put us in front of new audience members,” the Back to Back ensemble said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“We might feel a little bit nervous but we will remind ourselves that we have been touring the world with Back to Back for two decades and we are really good at making theatre.<\/p>\n

“We will trust our instincts and know that what matters to us in the world will matter to audiences in Paris or wherever.”<\/p>\n

Back to Back artistic director Bruce Gladwin said the five works at Festival D’Automne was an amazing opportunity to see the evolution of Back to Back’s creative practice over 21 years.<\/p>\n

“Retrospectives are usually the bastion of the most respected cinema, music and the visual arts, so as a theatre company it feels exciting and humbling to be bestowed with this Paris Portrait,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The invitation is a tribute to the long list of artists who have fed Back to Back’s creative fire since its inception in 1987.<\/p>\n

“Realising the delivery of five theatrical works across eight weeks will require stamina, logistical precision and refined artistry. Our ensemble of actors and their collaborators are ready for the challenge. As the artistic director I am thrilled and honoured to be part of the experience.”<\/p>\n

Festival d’Automne \u00e0 Paris director Francesa Corrona said the Portraits were unique opportunities to enter deeply into the world of a singular artistic voice.<\/p>\n

“In the case of Back to Back Theatre, [this is] an extraordinary collective imagination,” she said.<\/p>\n
