MORE than 2,000 runners are expected to hit the start line next weekend when the inaugural Barwon Heads Running Festival makes its debut on the Bellarine.<\/p>\n

The 21 June event will see participants tackle the scenic Thirteenth Beach Road course at their own pace, with distances ranging from a children’s race through to a half marathon. Runners can choose from four events: the headline 21km half marathon, a 10km run, 5km event and 1km kids’ race.<\/p>\n

The festival is being delivered by Run the Pen, the organisation behind a series of popular community running events on the Mornington Peninsula.<\/p>\n

Founder Scott Hollow said Barwon Heads was a natural choice as the event expanded beyond its traditional base.<\/p>\n

“We are always looking at new locations that are unique and Barwon Heads was perfect with its scenic ocean-front trail,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Fun runs are attractive, fun and taking off with big numbers. It’s no different here, with already 2,000 runners expected.<\/p>\n

“We are thrilled to have such a good number. It shows Barwon Heads has a great appetite for it and are keen to take part.”<\/p>\n

All courses will follow sections of Thirteenth Beach Road before looping back towards the Barwon Heads Hotel.<\/p>\n

“It’s a cracking trail along the water there, and it’s nice and flat, which everyone loves,” Hollow said. “I’m sure we will get some really fast times.”<\/p>\n

All participants will receive a medal, while age-group placegetters will also be recognised.<\/p>\n
