{"id":121445,"date":"2026-06-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=121445"},"modified":"2026-06-11T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T18:00:00","slug":"the-book-retreat-readers-cant-get-enough-of-comes-to-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/the-book-retreat-readers-cant-get-enough-of-comes-to-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"The book retreat readers can&#8217;t get enough of comes to Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ONE of Australia&#8217;s most prolific romance authors will bring a book club of a different kind to Geelong this month.<\/p>\n<p>The sold-out three-day event, which reached capacity months in advance, will bring together 20 authors and more than 130 readers from across the country for panel discussions, book chats, social events and intimate opportunities to connect.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by bestselling author Rachael Johns, the retreat was created as an alternative to traditional writers&#8217; festivals, with a focus on building relationships between readers, authors and fellow book enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>Johns said many attendees travelled alone and left with lifelong friendships.<\/p>\n<p>But what makes the event unique is the access readers have to authors beyond the traditional signing table.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It really is different,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/IMG_20260609_115702_74255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachael Johns&#8217; Book Club Retreat begins each year with a themed cocktail party. Photo: supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you go to a writers&#8217; festival or a readers&#8217; festival, you go with a friend or by yourself. You don&#8217;t necessarily meet other bookish people because you just sit there. You don&#8217;t really interact a huge amount with the authors. You might get a book signed, but that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whereas this event is really about the book community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our slogan is book people are the best people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is a philosophy Johns and co-host Anthea Hodgson have embraced since launching the book club, which now has more than 6,500 members.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2017, the club has featured almost 100 novels, with many readers now regular retreat attendees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the readers, it&#8217;s a great experience because they feel they&#8217;re friends with their favourite authors and often it does become that way,&#8221; Johns said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188979\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-188979\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/Rachael2025websize_94063_tn1781093412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"899\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachael Johns will host her annual Book Club Retreat in Geelong this month. Photo: supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And for authors, once these readers have made that connection with you, they&#8217;re fans for life and they will share your work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After debuting in Hahndorf in 2023, the retreat has continued to grow, with this year&#8217;s Geelong event the largest yet.<\/p>\n<p>While Johns is keen to welcome more people in the future, she is equally determined to preserve the sense of community that has become the retreat&#8217;s hallmark.<\/p>\n<p>With 20 authors attending, she said turning down author applications was difficult but highlighted how far the event had grown beyond her original expectations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We definitely don&#8217;t intend to stop doing this now,&#8221; Johns said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each year we&#8217;ve have some authors come back, but more also new ones coming in. Photo: supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Johns said Geelong was a natural choice when looking for a venue for the 2026 event, with its waterfront location and strong tourism appeal helping place it at the top of the shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>Travelling to a different regional destination each year allows the retreat to support local businesses while keeping the experience fresh for returning attendees.<\/p>\n<p>Each year Johns partners with a local independent bookseller, and she said the retreat&#8217;s readers were enthusiastic supporters of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, attendees spent more at the event&#8217;s pop-up bookstore in a single day than the host bookshop would typically make across an entire weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The sold-out Rachael Johns&#8217; Book Club Retreat will be held at Novotel Geelong from 19 to 21 June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ONE of Australia&#8217;s most prolific romance authors will bring a book club of a different kind to Geelong this month.
