After a hit-and-miss start to the season, Newcomb players have been told they need to step up.<\/p>\n
The Power secured a 14-point win over Torquay in last weekend’s round 11 game, but head coach Tony Mirabella wants more consistency from his side.<\/p>\n
He said frustration is building around the gap in the side’s best and worst performances, particularly following recent losses to Barwon Heads and Portarlington.<\/p>\n
Mirabella said he does not want the group to be surprised when it beats higher-ranked sides.<\/p>\n
“We’re now starting to show where we can be and rather than being ecstatic that we’re winning these games, we’re more focused on that we won that game because we’re good enough,” Mirabella said.<\/p>\n
“Now we need to make sure we’re winning the other games that we’re almost expected to win. It was good [to win this weekend], but obviously the previous two weeks were not acceptable.”<\/p>\n
He said the recent losses were a wake-up call and a reminder of how tight the Bellarine Football League competition is.<\/p>\n
Newcomb has already won more games than it did in 2025, with Mirabella confident the group can keep building. But he warned complacency has no place in football.<\/p>\n
Recent conversations with the squad have focused on players consistently executing their roles.<\/p>\n
Midfielder Ben Clark has been a prime example.<\/p>\n
The former St Joseph’s junior has dominated through the midfield, with his defensive pressure helping create opportunities for the Power’s key forwards.<\/p>\n
Mirabella described him as one of the competition’s most underrated players.<\/p>\n
“He has now racked up 40 tackles in the last three games,” Mirabella said.<\/p>\n
“He plays out a role as a really important midfielder, ensuring that players like Logan Wagener and Luke Justin can go to work.<\/p>\n
“For me, he has been the in-form player for us.”<\/p>\n
Sitting mid-table with six wins, the Power now have a well-earned fortnight away from the field.<\/p>\n
Mirabella said the team has played 14 of the past 15 weekends and was ready for a break.<\/p>\n
He is hopeful his side will be fresh and ready to hunt down another win when it returns to the field against Anglesea at Grinter Reserve on 27 June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
