{"id":121943,"date":"2026-06-24T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=121943"},"modified":"2026-06-24T15:40:42","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T05:40:42","slug":"how-good-has-the-world-cup-been","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/how-good-has-the-world-cup-been\/","title":{"rendered":"How good has the World Cup been?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NOT only are we witnessing elite football in amazing stadiums, but Australians have scored an extremely viewer-friendly time-zone to watch it all unfold.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s little wonder that many of us have been hit by World Cup fever.<\/p>\n<p>Our Socceroos were outstanding in their opening fixture, with two incredible goals against an opposition nobody gave us a chance of beating.<\/p>\n<p>Their energy and disciplined defensive play mixed beautifully with that Aussie spirit we all love.<\/p>\n<p>A lacklustre first-half against the host nation cost the boys in their second match.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it was the occasion, nerves or emotional fatigue that got the better of them, but the team just didn&#8217;t look their usual selves.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, we all learn the most from our losses and we&#8217;re sitting in a good position as we head into the next match.<\/p>\n<p>The Socceroos need to at least draw against Paraguay to progress.<\/p>\n<p>If you had offered that result to coach Tony Popovic at the start of the tournament, I&#8217;m sure he would&#8217;ve taken it.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;ll be no mean feat.<\/p>\n<p>Paraguay beat both Brazil and Argentina in their qualifying campaign so the Socceroos will have to be at their best.<\/p>\n<p>Popovic made some huge selection decisions in the opening match. None more so than replacing captain Mat Ryan with the 22-year-old Patrick Beach.<\/p>\n<p>This decision paid dividends and the coach was lauded.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_189695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189695\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-189695\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/20260621114846034398_62066.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-189695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australia defender Alessandro Circati and United States of America midfielder Malik Tillman in the air during the FIFA World Cup soccer match between Australia and USA. Photo: Steve Faber\/Cal Sport Media\/Sipa USA.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were more selections surprises in game two, none bigger than leaving both goalscorers out of the starting lineup.<\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, the sentiment from fans around the world was that Popovic got it all wrong!<\/p>\n<p>In my view, he would have had good reasons. Perhaps he was thinking ahead to our third game?<\/p>\n<p>Was this a defensive decision to mitigate the strong USA fullbacks? Only those on the inside know, but we need to trust that Popovic will have his team firing for our third match day.<\/p>\n<p>Progressing from their current group would be an amazing achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Australian sporting teams tend to punch above their weight on the international stage and seeing this young side progress from this very tough group would be huge.<\/p>\n<p>From there, anything is possible!<\/p>\n<p>Bosses, give your staff an extra long lunch break! Teachers, have you got a TV in your classroom?
