Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition was curated by Claire Durand-Ruel, the great-great-granddaughter of Paul Durand-Ruel, alongside French art historian Marianne Mathieu.<\/p>\n<p>Mathieu said some of the works in the exhibition have not been publicly displayed for more than a century.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This event is not only an event in Geelong, not only an event in Australia, but an event in the world,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Gallery chief executive and director Humphrey Clegg said the exhibition continued the gallery&#8217;s long tradition of presenting significant works to regional audiences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ImpressionistsExhibi_37645.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Director and CEO of Geelong Gallery Humphrey Clegg (pictured) said this exhibition demonstrates Geelong&#8217;s standing in the broader art scene of Australia. Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Geelong has a long and proud history of presenting exceptional exhibitions, celebrating its collection and promoting the most exciting artists of today and throughout Australia&#8217;s history,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Gallery&#8217;s relationship with impressionism stretches back to the foundation of its collection, which began with the acquisition of Australian impressionist Frederick McCubbin&#8217;s A Bush Burial, painted in 1890.<\/p>\n<p>At its heart, the exhibition celebrates the legacy of French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, whose support helped transform impressionism from a ridiculed artistic movement into one of the most influential styles in art history.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/ImpressionistsExhibi_37628.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The show is inspired by the life work of French art dealer Paul Duran-Ruel. Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clegg said Durand-Ruel played a decisive role in the rise of artists such as Monet and Pissarro, championing their work at a time when many struggled to sell paintings and attract critical support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like all things in life, Monet gets much of the credit for what took a village to build, and much of Monet&#8217;s support and encouragement came from one man, his art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel,&#8221; Clegg said.<\/p>\n<p>Durand-Ruel began championing Monet and Pissarro after discovering their work during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, impressionist painting was widely dismissed by critics and many of its artists struggled to make a living from their work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG Gallery is marking its 130th anniversary with what gallery leaders describe as one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever staged in regional Victoria, bringing together masterpieces by some of the world&#8217;s most celebrated impressionist artists.
