{"id":123140,"date":"2026-07-28T12:06:03","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T02:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/allan-faces-battle-to-hold-onto-once-safe-bendigo-east-seat\/"},"modified":"2026-07-28T12:06:03","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T02:06:03","slug":"allan-faces-battle-to-hold-onto-once-safe-bendigo-east-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/allan-faces-battle-to-hold-onto-once-safe-bendigo-east-seat\/","title":{"rendered":"Allan faces battle to hold onto once-safe Bendigo East seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jacinta Allan is <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/allan-steps-aside-as-premier-of-victoria\/\">no longer premier of Victoria<\/a>, but the next fight of her political life is fast approaching.<\/p>\n<p>The long-time Bendigo East MP will face voters in four months at the state election, with her once-safe seat emerging as one of Labor&#8217;s biggest battlegrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Allan holds Bendigo East by more than 10 per cent, but a Redbridge poll earlier this month projected Labor would lose the electorate amid a surge in support for One Nation.<\/p>\n<p>The seat is among 26 electorates Labor reportedly considers at risk and is expected to target heavily during the election campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Allan has represented Bendigo East since defeating four-term Liberal MP Michael John in 1999 and has been re-elected at each of the past six state elections.<\/p>\n<p>At the 2022 election, she secured 48.3 per cent of first-preference votes and defeated Liberal candidate Darrin Schade with 60.3 per cent of the two-party preferred vote.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116308\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116308\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/07\/lethlean-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nationals candidate Andrew Lethlean (centre) is hoping to unseat former premier Jacinta Allan in Bendigo East at the November state election. Photo: Adam Carswell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While One Nation is yet to name a candidate for the seat, Nationals hopeful Andrew Lethlean is emerging as Allan&#8217;s main rival among the declared field.<\/p>\n<p>Lethlean, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/lethlean-stands-for-state-bendigo-east-seat\/\">who was preselected in April<\/a>, has worked as a publican for 30 years and is returning to politics after contesting the federal seat of Bendigo in 2025, where he secured a 10 per cent swing against incumbent Labor MP Lisa Chesters.<\/p>\n<p>Election analyst Antony Green has described Lethlean as a &#8220;strong challenger&#8221; in Bendigo East.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberals are not expected to contest Bendigo East under the Coalition agreement, although party volunteers have been doorknocking in the electorate.<\/p>\n<p>Local engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/state-election-candidates-confirmed\/\">Michael Tolhurst will again contest Bendigo East<\/a> for the Greens after polling 8.7 per cent of the primary vote in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Victorians head to the polls on 28 November.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jacinta Allan is no longer premier of Victoria, but the next fight of her political life is fast approaching.
