{"id":13787,"date":"2018-08-15T09:56:51","date_gmt":"2018-08-15T09:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=13787"},"modified":"2018-08-17T04:07:32","modified_gmt":"2018-08-17T04:07:32","slug":"mayors-column-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/mayors-column-2\/","title":{"rendered":"MAYOR\u2019S COLUMN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Community Planting Day\u00a0<\/strong><strong>10th anniversary<\/strong><br \/>\nCouncil thanks everyone who rugged up to volunteer their services at the 10th annual Community Planting Day in spite of overnight rain and a cold and windy morning.<\/p>\n<p>The 10th annual Community Planting Day was hosted in celebration of National Tree Day onSunday July 29 by the Bellarine Catchment Network and the Swan Bay Environment Association, supported by the Borough of Queenscliffe. Indigenous plants were provided by the Queenscliff Community Indigenous Nursery.<\/p>\n<p>Forty volunteers, including the full membership of the Queenscliffe Rotary Club, planted 350 plants from 20 different species of groundcover, midlevel shrubs and overstorey plants, and removed weeds and litter from The Narrows car park and surrounding coastal moonah woodland. There were so many volunteers at the event that more plants were needed to make sure everybody had something to do.<\/p>\n<p>We also unveiled a commemorative sign provided by Council to acknowledge the 10-year anniversary of community involvement in the maintenance of The Narrows site.<\/p>\n<p>It was wonderful to be a part of another event that demonstrates our community culture of giving, especially one that makes such a difference to the health of our local environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Vietnam Veterans\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Day Commemoration March\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and Service<\/strong><br \/>\nOn Saturday August 18, the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia and the National Servicemen\u2019s Association invite Veterans from all conflicts and their families and friends to join the National Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration March and Service.<\/p>\n<p>The March will step off from the Queenscliff Post Office at 47 Hesse Street (corner of Hesse Street and Hobson Street) at 10.30am. The Service will follow at 11am at the RSL Hall at the corner of Hesse Street and King Street, Queenscliff.<\/p>\n<p>Please join us to participate in this important commemorative event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>St Aloysius students\u00a0<\/strong><strong>have their say<\/strong><br \/>\nRecently I visited St Aloysius Catholic Primary School in Queenscliff with members of Council\u2019s Executive Management Team to talk about the role of Council with the Grade 6 students. The students had written to me about the skate park, netball courts and other matters earlier in the year, and it was marvellous to be able to visit the school to discuss their ideas. The students presented their priorities very clearly for Council to consider.<\/p>\n<p>There are certainly some very bright young minds in our midst.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Development Grants\u00a0<\/strong><strong>support community involvement<\/strong><br \/>\nOn Thursday August 2, Council announced the recipients of our 2018\u201319 Community Development Grants program at a presentation evening held in the Queenscliff Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Council awarded a total of $19,091 to 11 local organisations to support community, art and cultural projects and activities that enhance the wellbeing and quality of life of people living in the Borough of Queenscliffe.<\/p>\n<p>The recipients of our 2018\u201319 Community Development Grants are listed below:<br \/>\n\u2022 Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre<br \/>\n\u2022 Point Lonsdale Tennis Club Inc.<br \/>\n\u2022 Bellarine SES<br \/>\n\u2022 Queenscliff Neighbourhood House<br \/>\n\u2022 Queenscliff Kindergarten<br \/>\n\u2022 Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club<br \/>\n\u2022 Queenscliff Lighthouse Theatre Group<br \/>\n\u2022 Queenscliff Community Sports Club<br \/>\n\u2022 Bellarine Community Health<br \/>\n\u2022 Point Lonsdale Board Riders Club Inc.<br \/>\n\u2022 Queenscliff Golf Club Inc.<\/p>\n<p>We are delighted to provide financial support so that local groups and organisations can continue to give back, and give more, to support the Borough of Queenscliffe community and provide opportunities for people to feel involved, needed and connected.<\/p>\n<p>To find out more about the Community Development Grants program and the 2018\u201319 recipients, please visit the Community Grants webpage in the Grants and Funding section of our website, queenscliffe.vic.gov.au.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August Listening Post<\/strong><br \/>\nCouncil\u2019s next Community Listening Post will be held on Thursday August 30 from 10.30am to 11.30am in the Point Lonsdale Primary School Hall at 22 Bowen Road, Point Lonsdale.
