TWO Surf Coast residents have been commended for brave conduct after separate acts of bravery resulting in two lives being saved.<\/p>\n
The Australian Bravery Awards on August 20 recognised nationwide one Star of Courage, 18 Bravery Medals, 40 Commendation for Brave Conduct and three Group Bravery Citations.<\/p>\n
Amongst the 40 commendations for brave conduct was Jan Juc resident Ceirin Byrne who rescued his elderly neighbour from a burning unit on April 18 2016.<\/p>\n
In the process, Mr Byrne\u2019s own Jan Juc unit went up in flames and was subsequently destroyed.<\/p>\n
The award recognised his actions in running towards his neighbour\u2019s home despite the intense flames.<\/p>\n
Mr Byrne was unable to get inside the unit during his first attempt but returned with a wood splitter, broke down the door and guided the elderly man to safety.<\/p>\n
The second brave conduct commendation was for Torquay resident Nicolas Bompas who witnessed a 4WD and van collide on the Surf Coast Highway near Geelong on January 4 2013.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt happened in front of us and it was lucky my wife was driving. I\u2019m not sure I would\u2019ve reacted the same without her there, I wasn\u2019t putting anyone else in my car in danger,\u201d Mr Bompas said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have felt right if I didn\u2019t have my wife with the kids, they were only four and five at the time so I don\u2019t think I would\u2019ve been able to leave them alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just went and assessed the situation and I saw one girl trapped by herself, she needed my assistance. It was me and then two more people arrived to help me carry her out.<\/p>\n
\u201cI knew the car was leaking and I didn\u2019t know what would happen next but at the time my priority was only to get the lady out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Bompas climbed on top of the car leaking oil and smoke and pulled the lady out to safety then
\nreturned to switch off the vehicle.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs I was walking away there was a loud bang and the car exploded inside. Once she was safe I just left and went back towards my car. I had no idea I\u2019d even received a commendation until I got the letter.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
