THE state Opposition has responded to Labor pledges about limiting growth in the Bellarine and the Surf Coast, saying its commitment will similarly block inappropriate development in the area.<\/p>\n
This week, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said that the Liberal Nationals would introduce strict planning rules within the first 100 days of taking office.<\/p>\n
He said the former Coalition government identified the Bellarine Peninsula as an \u201cIdentified Distinctive Area\u201d in Plan Melbourne 2014.<\/p>\n
He said the Bellarine Peninsula, along with the Mornington Peninsula, Macedon Ranges and the Yarra Valley was recognised as having significant geographical and physical features which contributed to the quality of life of all Victorians and visitors.<\/p>\n
Liberal candidate for Bellarine Brian McKiterick said he was committed to working with Mr Guy and the Liberal team in Geelong to ensure that the Bellarine Peninsula was protected and could be enjoyed for generations to come.<\/p>\n
Shadow Minister for Geelong and South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula were not areas where endless growth should occur.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not going to work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrowth on the Surf Coast has been an issue for the past 10 years, going back to the Brumby government. We have to look forward and protect and preserve what is there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last week, Planning Minister Richard Wynne announced that Labor would declare both the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula \u201cA Distinctive Area and Landscape\u201d under the Planning and Environment Act 1987, with a Statement of Planning Policy to be produced in consultation with local councils and the community within the first year of a Labor government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
