THE Surf Coast Shire has agreed to pay nearly $1.5 million to buy land as part of its plan to eventually create a second oval at Winchelsea’s Eastern Reserve.<\/p>\n
The landowner presented the council with an offer of sale in June. Following negotiations, the council agreed to buy the land for $1.48 million.<\/p>\n
The land forms part of 135 Austin Street and includes 2.17 hectares covered by a Public Acquisition Overlay.<\/p>\n
An adjoining 1.32 hectares outside the overlay area will also be transferred into the shire\u2019s ownership as an open space contribution.<\/p>\n
Both parcels are being simultaneously transferred to provide a parcel of 3.49 hectares once the subdivision plan is completed.<\/p>\n
Winchelsea Ward councillor Heather Wellington said the total acquisition would support the future plans for Eastern Reserve.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Winchelsea\u2019s premier sporting facility, Eastern Reserve continues to serve our community\u2019s sporting and recreational needs. In future though, the reserve will need to expand to meet the demands of our growing population.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis acquisition provides for the reserve\u2019s future development, which is an excellent outcome for all concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fellow ward councillor Carol McGregor said the 2007 Eastern Reserve master plan first noted the land\u2019s potential for the reserve\u2019s expansion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was reinforced in the 2014-15 review, which was the subject of extensive community consultation. The ensuing final concept plan made provision for a second sports oval, subject to adjoining land being acquired.<\/p>\n
