WORK has started on the revitalisation of Queenscliff\u2019s Fisherman\u2019s Wharf to improve the appearance, safety and functionality of the area and stimulate recreational and tourism activities in the area.<\/p>\n
Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville was in Queenscliff last week to acknowledge the start of construction works, which are being delivered with a $2.38 million state government investment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been very pleased to have supported this important project for many years,\u201d Ms Neville said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn 2010, the then Labor Government committed to the original $1.8 million for the rebuild, which subsequently was increased by the incoming Liberal Government by $580,000 to the $2.38 million.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, this money had many strings attached that directly led to the proposed Stingray feeding attraction.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis so-called attraction was overwhelmingly rejected by the local Queenscliff community.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn our return to government we recommitted to the $2.38 million and in support of local concerns I had the stingray attraction removed.<\/p>\n
“This has been replaced with the strongly supported agreement to highlight the important and proud history of this wharf area.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Neville said the improved facilities at the wharf would help to attract more visitors to the waterfront, which would have flow-on benefits to business operators in the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will also support the marine-based activities in the region including commercial and recreational fishing, recreational boating and the marine repair industry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
“The construction period will create local jobs and once complete, the upgraded wharf will create opportunities for new business ventures and provide an attractive space for locals and visitors alike.\u201d<\/p>\n
Queenscliff Harbour Pty Ltd is delivering the $2.94 million project, which will rebuild the Fisherman\u2019s Wharf, demolish derelict buildings adjacent the wharf, upgrade the dinghy basin, install new signage, implement new interactive tourism kiosks and improve car parking and landscaping.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
