THE power station at the Anglesea mine is gone but the chimney stack remains and Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson wants it gone, calling it an \u201ceyesore\u201d, \u201ca blight on the landscape\u201d and that \u201cit no longer serves any purpose\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlready, I have received overwhelming feedback that the chimney stack must be removed. I have not received one email in support of it remaining,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Ms Henderson said was also calling on mine operator Alcoa to immediately remove the debris from the demolished power station as it may include asbestos.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is inexcusable that Alcoa plans to remove this over such a long period of time. Just imagine the risk this debris would pose to local residents if Anglesea was hit by a strong northerly wind.\u201d<\/p>\n
The stack is not scheduled to be brought down according to the Anglesea Futures plan and what should be done with it received \u201cmixed feedback\u201d, but Alcoa has consistently refused to reveal the raw number of people who wanted the stack kept or demolished, despite frequent requests to do so by the community.<\/p>\n
