THE City of Greater Geelong has extended its funding offer of $3 million towards stage one of the Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour Precinct project until the end of 2019.<\/p>\n
The project is a priority for the council, and will see improved public access to the precinct, a safer environment for boat users, and the redevelopment of the Victorian\u00a0 Sailing School and Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC).<\/p>\n
The council\u2019s contribution of $3 million to the $19 million project was dependent on the RGYC securing the remaining funding from the state and federal governments, which it has now done.<\/p>\n
A further initial condition of the funding was for a precinct master plan to be approved by the council before December 31.<\/p>\n
While design consultants have started work on this plan, it is now expected to be presented to the council early next year. Subject to approval, this would allow construction to begin during 2019.<\/p>\n
The council\u2019s $3 million contribution remains contingent on completion of the master plan, and on the funds being put towards public space improvements and construction of a wave attenuator.<\/p>\n
The master plan process will include community consultation, and will also consider the needs of business operators using Fishermen\u2019s Basin.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis project has been a long-held vision, and it\u2019s pleasing to see it now progressing, with funding commitments from state and federal governments, as well as the RGYC,\u201d Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood said.<\/p>\n
