FROM December 1, sections of the Bellarine\u2019s coastline become dog on-leash zones.<\/p>\n
Maddie Glynn from Barwon Coast said this change was nothing new as it happened every year.<\/p>\n
\u201cSadly, we have already experienced significant attacks on wildlife and people, and the summer months are not upon us yet,\u201d Ms Glynn said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese incidents could have easily been prevented if owners had control over their dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n
As of December 1, the following areas will become dog on-leash zone:
\n\u2022 27W to 24W Barwon Heads side of the estuary
\n\u2022 20W to south of Riverview Family Caravan Park along the estuary, and
\n\u2022 20W to 13W ocean side of the Ocean Grove Spit.<\/p>\n
It is also a timely reminder that all dogs must be on a leash at all times when in carparks, beach access stairs or trails and pathways.<\/p>\n
A dog must not be off-leash until it is on the sand in the approved dog under effective control zone.\u00a0Ms Glynn said the beaches were habitat for the many coastal and marine creatures that share their homes with people.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we come into the peak season for juvenile seals, penguins and hooded plovers, just to name a few, people in charge of a dog must have control of their pets at all times,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is an offence for your dog rush, chase, disturb, harass, or attack any wildlife on the beaches or within the coastal reserves.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the weather improves more people with their dogs will frequent the beach.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot everybody who goes to the beach is comfortable with your dog near them, and they have a right to enjoy this beautiful place without fear.\u201d\u00a0Ms Glynn said the word from Barwon Coast was that not being aware there was a seal resting or plover nesting in a location that may not be signed was no excuse.<\/p>\n
She said letting your dog rush up to a person because \u201che is ok, he won\u2019t do anything\u201d, is not ok.<\/p>\n
\u201cBarwon Coast is increasing compliance efforts through the City of Greater Geelong and the Department Environment, Land, Water and Planning to ensure we do all Share Our Shores,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
